Wondered if anyone could help. A friend has had problems recently with his computer, he has had someone look at it but they cant find the problem.
These are the symptoms as far as I could get out of him as he was run off his feet working at the time.
Modem connects to the internet but all that comes up is the page that says cant find server. Press refresh or detect settings. He has been told that this could be a motherboard failure. He has had a new modem fitted so that cant be it. I wondered if it could just be something as simple as some settings being changed, though again the person who has looked at it for him cant find anything in particular.
    Any Ideas??????

You didn't tell us what OS or version of IE :), but try a repair of IE. Were there other problems before the modem switch? Redirects or anything strange? New installs or fixes done?

Need to get some more info from my friend before I can give anymore answers though I do believe he runs XP. He was working behind a bar last night and as there was a £200 jackpot on the pub quiz you can imajin how busy he was.

Suggest going to the ISP's website and find their setup/configuration information. Print it out and pass it on to him.

Are You sure that the modem connects? That page usually comes up when there´s no connection.

When I installed a new modem on a XP machine, it didn´t find a dialing tone. The installer had chosen COM-port #4 for the new modem, a port which wasn´t available. The previous modem used COM-port #3 which was available.

I uninstalled both modems and reinstalled the new one. This time the installer chose COM-port #3 which was no longer used by the previous modem and everything worked.

I´m sure there´s a way to install COM-port #4 but I don´t know how and my solution worked.

    Thanks to you both.
I will be going around there later so will have a look at the com ports ans isp site. Will take my laptop so that I at least can get on the net to do any downloading that might be needed and will be able to post any finds or results.

i got about 5 computers a day with this problem,, its always spyware.

get ad-aware with the updated definations, scan and remove everything even if it takes 3 system scans and 2 restarts to clean out everything.

    most definatly spyware.
