    Hi all,
I recently removed and replaced my modem, as I wanted it to sit further away from my graphics card (at the moment it sits directly underneath the GPU fan, which seems a little too close). After replacing the modem into the original slot, it no longer works.
Device Manager shows me an exclamation mark where there is a problem with the modem, and the following is reported in the 'device status':

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

I have a SoftK56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone CARP modem, which is loacted in PCI Slot 2 (PCI bus 3, device 9, function 0)

I have tried to use the windows troubleshoot utility, but this is almost as useful (but not quite) as a hole in the head.

Any idea? I would replace it since they're so cheap these days, but I'm not convinced that the problem is with the modem itself. It seems like something reset when I removed it, and tried to put it into another slot.

(for those who have read my other thread re 'heatsink / fan', I believe my modem issues are unrelated - as I removed my modem prior to anything else I attempted with my heatsink.)

Did the modem work in the other slot? Have you checked that it is seated correctly in the original slot?

Barring a modem fault - rather unlikely, but still possible, I would try this approach ....

Uninstall the modem software and remove the card - reboot and then reinstall the modem from scratch.

    Thanks for your feedback Pete.
I removed the modem, rebooted, removed the device through "Phone & Modem options ", turned off, inserted card into a different slot, rebooted, and the modem was recognised without any trouble.
Not sure why device manager was causing my computer to restart automatically, but at least now my modem works!

    Regards,
    S

Glad to hear that at least one problem is resolved - thanks for the update.
