I have seen this issue in two computers.

One of them being an ancient Pentium 166.

The other being a new Dell P4 2.0.

In both of these systems the modem will dial-out with the phone line hooked to either the phone or line jacks on the modem.....

Is this a development that my hiatus from modems has caused me to miss?

Every modem I have ever dealt with required the line be in the 'line' jack or you got the ever popular no dial tone message.

    Please enlighten :)

    Hi All.

Yep, the dial up modems have changed here and there. For example, the Diamond Supra Express external modems (serial and USB) went thataway. You can plug the line into either plug and the phone into either plug.
