My sons younger sons computer is running Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222A and is not connected to the internet, although it was at one time.
    (approx 2yrs ago)

I know it is completely free of ad\spyware, and virii but has just recently started having a problem.

When going to the Control Panel and just before the Control Panel Window opens a little box pops up with "MMCPL" in the top left corner, an exclamation point in a yellow triangle and says "Unable to load language resources ", with the only option being "OK ".
When I click OK the Control Panel opens. There doesn't seem to be a problem doing anything in Control Panel that I can see.

Nothing has been added or removed in quite some time.

Is there anyway I can fix this error, I've looked here and so far have found nothing and have had no luck with a MicroSoft search.

Any help would be appreciated....

You have not mentioned if you have already tried the suggested fix that comes up most often when this error is involved:
    http://www.kbalertz.com/kb_Q299929.aspx

Related to ati display adapter and the mmcpl.cpl.

    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if an ATI Technologies Inc. display adapter is installed in your computer.

You receive the error message when you install an incorrect language version of the ATI Multimedia Center from the companion CD-ROM that is included with your ATI display adapter.

    RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Uninstall and then reinstall ATI Multimedia Center.
(AND/OR Seek and updated your display adapter version.)

Method 2: Rename the MMCPL.CPL Control Panel File
(This would be considered a work around)

    -----------------
Do a find for mmcpl.cpl and see if this cpl opens when double clicked upon.

In answer to your question, No, I have not tried the above fix let alone any when it comes to ATI. The reason for I haven't is because there is absolutely nothing in my sons computer that has anything to do with ATI and never has been.

I did however do a search for the mmcpl.cpl file and found none. It was a complete search, and everything was checked both through Windows search and by going through each and every file folder on the system, mmcpl.cpl cannot be found anywhere.

The display adapter used on the system is SiS 630\730 and always has been.

Well shoot! It sure would have been easier had you had the ati adapter and mmcpl.cpl problem but since that has been eliminated as a possibility...

    http://home.earthlink.net/~leetutor/FixWin/ContPanl/control.htm
The .cpl files are loaded automatically when you start Control Panel. Some of these files are loaded using entries in the [MMCPL] section of the Control.ini file in your Windows folder. Perhaps this error is not literally with mmcpl.cpl but rather an [any].cpl loaded from the [mmcpl] heading/category.
NOTE: perhaps opening the control.ini in notepad and having a peek into it, will offer a clue or mention something reguarding mmcpl.

You could test the various .cpl files to see if one is damaged by using the method described in the above article. In other words do a file find for *.cpl and click on each one found and see if it has a problem.

Certainly would make things a whole lot simpler :D

When I see MM I think of Realplayer Music Match. If Realplayer is installed I suggest to get rid of it. I have had to remove it off several computers and even reformat some of those.

I suggest using Notepad and opening the file "Control.Ini" or just doubleclick it.
You will see something like this, this is just an example, the solution will work no matter what.

    [MMCPL]
    mlcfg32.cpl=C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MAPI\1033\95\MLCFG32.CPL

Just add a semi colon as I have below, save and reboot.
    ;[MMCPL]
    ;mlcfg32.cpl=C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MAPI\1033\95\MLCFG32.CPL

What this does is nullify that line without deleting it.

    markp62,
I did exactly what you suggested, actually just before you posted your reply and it worked out perfectly.

I thought I'd try and if worse came to worse I'd just redo his windows for him, but now there is no longer any error at all. Editting the offending lines from the Control.ini file caused no problems.....

    Thanks again everyone..........

    Ahhh,
So it was a under heading of [mmcpl] and a cpl loaded from control.ini. Well, I'm gald to see this worked and the nuisance is behind you. Thank you for taking the time and remembering to share the results. :)
