I discovered that when I opened the Event Viewer there was data. Just a message stating that MMC could not create the snap-in and may have been installed incorrectly.

After many hours of research and printing off info I finally found a web site where several other Vista users experienced the very same issue. They all seemed to resolve it by renaming the MMC.exe file which I've been unable to do.

I was elated to find a solution but now I can't apply the fix.

If this is a system file and others can manage to change theirs, why can't I do the same? This was also when I discovered that I too had a problem with Task Scheduler. Same message.

This really seems to be a Microsoft problem and I wonder why it isn't documented on their site!!

Surely some of the Microsoft gurus have knowledge of this?

I would certainly appreciate help on this matter. I just don't know where else to go unless I pay for Microsoft support:mad: :(

    Hello vegaspat,

Where is mmc.exe located on your system and what's the size?

Should be located in the System32 folder. If it's not, good possibility it's a bogus (malware) file.

    Charles,

First I would like to say that I just saw that in my first post I had a typo. It should have said there was NO data or log files.

And yes the MMC.exe file is in my System32 folder.

Would you like me to send you the link where I discovered that other folks were have the same identical problem with the almost identical string of numbers?
This is what the error message was on my PC. Aside from the not being able to create the snap-in.

    CLSID:FX:b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510

    What the heck is CLSID?

I sure wish I could get this issue resolved.

    Thanks for your time.

    Charles,

This is the info from the forum I discovered. What scares me is I just realized it is the Microsoft TechNEt forum and it wasn't the moderator that even figured it out. Doesn't seem to be much consolation in that area.
    _______________________________________________________________
**** "After typing this I found a mmc.exe.config file that was forcing the version of .net. Renaming the file fixed my problem.

You rock! I spent a long time trying to figure this one out. An application (Peachtree accounting) installed the .net 1.1 framework and hosed many of my MMC snap in's including event viewer, task scheduler and IIS 7 admin.

I looked in my system32 folder and sure enough there was an mmc.exe.config file that had the supported runtime section set to "v1.1.4322 ". I couldn't seem to edit the file to comment out that section, vista wouldn't let me save it, but it did let me rename it to mmc.exe.config.BAK and sure enough everything started working again. I'm guessing these problems with mmc and snap in's in Vista are all related to apps that install the .net 1.1 framework and windows vista's inability to protect that mmc.exe.config file.*** "

Are there ANY sites that have really proficient and knowledgeable Microsoft tech folks? And if this is indeed an issue why isn't it documented on the MS site?
BTW, I do not use Peachtree as a couple of these guys did.

    Hi vegaspat,

FWIW, what a CLSD is http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.aspnet.snapin.clsid.aspx

In the snippet you included, it's not mmc.exe that's being renamed, it's a file refered to as "an mmc.exe.config file ".

Searching my system - no such file, so can't tell you where it would be or whether or not it can be renamed. Is there such a config file on your system? A good bet would be that if it exists, it's also in the system32 folder.

http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=68330 mario seems to have the same or related problem.

    Charles,

I did a thorough search on my system and I also have no MMC.exe.config file. One person who posted said he corrected his issue by renaming the machine.config file. I don't have that file either.

I can't imagine not being able to access the Event Viewer. I experienced a strange computer problem the other day and was attempting to track it down which is when I discovered the MMC problem.Plus Task scheduler.

    I appreciate your help.

    Hi vegaspat,

Sorry not to be of more help, between you and mario, this is the first time I've run into this.

This does serve as a heads up, I'll keep an eye out.

    Thanks for trying.

IF you ever do run into anything please let me know though. For now I have no choice to let it go. No one has a solution.

    Charles,

I promised that if I found a solution I would let you know.

It's a miracle after all the time and posted messages but my last try was the magic one.

Someone simply sent me this link. I really didn't see how it would work but I tried it and it did. I did not do a System Restore because I had no idea how long this had been a problem.

Thanks for trying to help in the first place. Duh!! I forgot the link in case you wanted to see it.
