A Dell (model 8300) running XP (SP3) has an IDE drive with
OS installed. Attempting to install a second drive, a SATA,
and XP does not see it.

The hardware is setup OK, the SATA disk is working (did a
format using the disk as a USB device). Both drive jumpers are set as cable-select.

I have the latest BIOS (from Dell) installed and re-installed
    the MB chipset.

Device manager does not show a SATA Controller and the
Dell site has none listed for this service tag.

So, does anyone know where a SATA controller/driver can be found for this model? Or is that the real problem?

I have seen (searches) where this drive mix is possible.
Granted it sounds backwards (IDE primary and SATA secondary) but some have it working.

    thank you,

Did you enable the SATA controller in the BIOS?

Steve is correct that SATA drives (at least the ones I have seen) do not have jumper settings. Each drive has it's own SATA signal cable attaching it to a SATA controller along with a power cable from PSU.

According to this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/SYSTEMS/dim8300/sm/specs.htm there are two 7 pin SATA signal connectors on the system board. To me this implies the board has a built-in SATA controller.

I know it is possible to mix IDE and SATA drives as my new PC has both although I use the SATA drive as the primary and my IDE drive as a secondary. My motherboard has both controllers built-in.

    wildfire,

I could not find a sata controller anywhere on the pc, bios,
    device manager, etc.

Looking at the dell site, they show 3 downloads for sata. I got
them, had to create onto a floppy, and installed. Seems to have worked but still no sata controller shows anywhere.

    Darned strange, i'm stumped.

I also have XP SP3 too. The SATA controller is listed in my Device Manager as the first item in the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers subheading. The driver for the controller is part of my chipset drivers from my board manufacturer (Intel). And the driver for the drive itself is a MIcrosoft driver.

My SATA drive is a Western Digital 500 GB.

    RIght you are!

Altho, its not present on this system in device manager.
Even after re-installing the MB Chipset, its not there.

If no controller, no SATA drive.
Thinking about just getting another IDE.

    thanks,
