On startup my computer defaults to the dos prompt and tells me that it needs to know where the vf32.vxd file is. I do not have the os software. How can I get the files I need?

    Hello Betty and Jan,

Bad news, dug out my ME installation disc - vf32.vxd is not there, so it's not part of the OS. Probably part of an application. The .vxd indicates it's a Virtual Device Driver.

A google search didn't trun it up either.

Have you tried a System Restore to a point prior to the problem?

    Regards - Charles

My system jumps right to the dos prompt. I can't get into the system to do a restore. I uninstalled mcafee and I think that's what started my problems. It must have taken out a file that is still needed.

I have an IT guy at work who is taking a look at it. I got all of my documents out but it's still a pain. I don't want to go through the hastle of having to re-install everything. There has to be an easier way. Hell, I'll gladly pay a computer pro to fix this. You would think that a missing file would be pretty straight forward.

    Betty,
No vf32.vxd on my WinME OS disk either, I'm sorry to say.

    Jan,
A Google search comes up with plenty of results for vredir.vxd - it seems to matter what version of Windows you're running. If you're running Win 98, there's some info for you here: http://www.duxcw.com/dcforum/DCForumID7/96.html
vredir.vxd does show up on my computer (WinME), in Windows\System. Charles, if you're reading this, can I just copy the file and send it to Jan?
Isn't there a way Betty could access System Restore from DOS?

    Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for looking in on this thread.

can I just copy the file and send it to Jan?

Yes, you might have to extract it when you give the copy command, but the system will tell you that and you say yes. The same on the other end - might have to extract to whatever folder it goes to.

Isn't there a way Betty could access System Restore from DOS?

None that I know of, dos is limited to non-existent in WinME.

What Betty might try is booting up in safe mode - hitting the F8 or F5 on bootup. One option in safe mode is "last good configuration" or she can try accessing SR thru the Start > Accessories > System Tools menus.

    Regards - Charles

That was a tough link to mail; the bbs system kept inserting brackets even tho I didn't want them. Finally had to eliminate the http:// - so that's why you had to copy and paste it. contained too many brackets. You probably tried one of my early edits (I hit submit accidentally and had to edit it online)

Sparrow's link works for me, Charles. The instructions call for a Windows Startup disk - that's different from the OS disk, isn't it? Bettysparkle, do you have a Windows Startup disk?
Charles, back to the idea of my sending Jan the vxd file she needs -- couldn't I just send it as an attachment in an email? I'm new to the concept of extracting...

Sure, that's what you do - it works.

And yes, the start up disc is the floppy that is an option to create in Add/Remove > Startup Disk tab

    Charlesvar,

I first tried to make a hypertext link, which I usually can, but the bbs kept inserting the square brackets (try it yourself). I decided that the only hope was to make somthing you could copy and paste ( a URL wouldn't work either (try it)). I know that you dont need the "http://" ever, so I deleted it and voila!!!!
