A couple days ago my computer started to turn off randomly without any warning at all. It has done this before but I always got the Blue Screen of Death. Today, thinking that I'd be able to get on for a little bit like I usually did before I was shut down upon so rudely, instead I got an error saying:

I tried to press 'r' but immediately my computer shuts down.

I tried to go onto Safe Mode with no luck as well.
When trying Safe Mode I got an edition to the error
I also tried doing a Primary Hard Disk Self Test and I got a #1 - 07 Fail error.

I do not have a recovery disk/Windows XP installation disk, so I asked a couple tech-savvy friends of mine and they said the best thing to do would be to use the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD/Companion DVD that my uncle has.

When I turned on my computer I tried both of these disks, getting the same error as before, except for a short 5-10 second prompt that showed nothing but a blinking underscore.

The disk I used is originally for a VAIO computer and not for the Compaq Presario V5000 that I currently own.

After about 4 to 5 minutes waiting, hoping something will work my computer ends up shutting off again.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry for not responding sooner

Sorry for not responding sooner to your answer, I've had a lot of work to do lately.

I was able to start the Recovery Partition by pressing f11 at start up, which I didn't realize I could do. What became very hopeful at first, soon ended.

About 10 minutes into the recovery, at about 35% done, my computer shut down, leaving me to restart it all over again. I tried about 4 to 5 times with the same problem, but then I got a stop message notifying that one of the core files has unexpectedly closed (or some sort of warning close to that).

But, after the first time I did this I get a new message at start up, saying that "<System root>\system32\hal.dll" is missing.

I tried using what was given in your answer to no help, getting the

After some research I've decided that in a few weeks I will just have to buy a new computer in all.

If you could borrow a Windows xp disc of the same version that is on the PC you could try a repair install as it should boot from the disc. Any other disc will not work.

If you can download the disc diagnostics and burn to a CD on another computer, that will run from the CD drive to confirm if you have a faulty hard drive. A test from the hard drive manufacturer will give a more accurate result.

The symptons do indicate a failling hard drive, if that is all that is wrong a replacement drive will be a much cheaper fix than a new PC.

Looks Igotz decided to mark this as resolved without providing any specifics.

    What we ask:

Yup, guess Igotz bought a new PC when a new hard drive would probably have fixed the issue.
