    Hi

I had an error message when installing a program on XP
    (HE sp1)

Read about 3 files which may have caused the problem in WindowsSystem32 folder. I have 2 of them : Stdole32.tlb & Stdole2.tlb but no. 3 is missing.

As I have an OEM XP installed how am I to get this file ?????

Is it possible to copy this file from somewhere to the folder it should be in ? If so can anyone advise on how to do this for someone who is totally unsure about the deep folders & files

The program installed but an error message appeared at the end telling me that it couldn't read memory lots of numbers - close the program

Apparantly Install shields can cause this without the 3 files ........
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you - really appreciate your help.

I just hope the ' merely copy ' bit is easy to me

I know one thing I will be able to download it just a bit less confidence in the copy bit ~ hopefully it will work out if I copy it to the folder the others are in.

    Thanks again.

    Help Please

    Hi

I have it downloaded but have not copied it yet as I do not want to do the wrong thing to make matters worse

I know the floder the other 2 files are in but do not know how I get this one alongside them.

I really would appreciate your guidance. I do not have any confidence in doing this.

The link is great as there are a lot of files which may just be needed - i.e when I discover how to copy them to where they should be !

Hope you don't mind helping further. I would most likely have kept it as it was until I found the confidence - if ever :(

OK go to where the file you just downloaded is. Right click this file and then left click copy.

Then open My Computer, click c:, then the windows folder (this could be "Winnt" or just "Windows ") once you click it find the folder named "System32" click and enter this folder.

Now on the white space between files or folders Right click and then left click paste.

You should see the file appear!

Close out and shutdown and reboot to see if this was in fact all you needed!

    Good luck

    Double checking

    Hi

I have copied the file & found the folder. At least you have got me this far ......... Thank you.

This is going to seem really stupid BUT as the files are in alphabetical order ...... should I be copying it in the right place ?

I see you say in the white space between files & folders - this would only be a wee space - is that correct ? I have all the folders & then all the files start. Do I copy it before the start of the files & after the re-boot it will have placed itself beside the other 2 ?

Apologies for all these questions but I really want to know for sure this is the right place. I have accessed the folder as you have guided - within 'C' my computer ( not by using explorer with the folders listed at the side ) Is this correct ?

    Many thanks for your patience.

By white space I mean do not put it on top of another file or folder. Slide to the bottom to find more open space to be sure.

Just put it anywhere here it will be alphabetized later.

How is the weather in Belfast today. Of course you can tell by my name that I am from Irish decent. Ireland is one of the places I plan on Visiting in the next year or so.

    Weather

    Hi

Small world ! You certainly would not like to be here today. It is dark, very windy & wet. A little bit of brightness has just arrived. Typically it is a Bank Holiday weekend therefore all the outdoor activities will suffer.

That is why we have so many green fields ...... hope you are able to visit & the sun will shine for you ...... Both sides of the border have their own charm.

We are North and have the Mourne Moutains etc but have been down south to Connemara - wonderful scenery - nothing to do but RELAX ..... think I should go there today - looking for the blank space .........

I will place the file at the end of the files and then hope it knows the alphabet !!!!

Thanks again - going to do it now. Your help is invaluable to me.

Task completed - it is in the folder but hasn't found it's place in the alphabet. At least it is there & I will know the next time I am installing if it has cured the problem .... many thanks. Now to sort all the paper about me .....................

    Ha

Well yesterday here was Glorious untill late afternoon. Came a severe thunder storm and hail half the size of golf balls. The Weather service issued a severe warning. For about 2 hours there was a Tornado warning and one was seen only 25 miles away.

Today it is overcast and wet but is expected to be beautiful in the afternoon.

So go relax a while! I plan on it also!

You MORE than deserve to relax - after helping me !

We had hailstones the other day. I was using the online weather maps & noted the tornados about your side of the world !

There are some really good weather maps online ......

    Hi

I do not know what happened or if it was related to the file I copied to Win32 BUT I could not get the computer to close down last night. It started to tell me iexplore etc wasn't responding.

I was able to re-boot & then close down but the system hung ' Windows is closing down '

Eventually it closed down as it should but left me wondering

Fortunately I had made a restore point before I put the file in. I decided that I would boot again ( wouldn't have slept otherwise ! )

Restored the system - the file removed ( it hadn't gone to it's alphabetical point ) I have closed down a few times this morning just to make sure it didn't happen again - it closes down as it should do now.

I just wonder if it has anything to do with th XP on my LT being an OEM set up by the supplier - the file was maybe never there & caused confusion by adding it

I have kept a copy of the file in case I find the problem with installing again - I realise it may not be related but I can shut down now. Oh Dear ...... if anything can happen it will happen to me :(

    Ok Mini

If everything works properly without it then leave it out.

Do you have any problems now, error messages, something don't work?

If you do then we may need to do a repair of XP by doing the following:

    XP CD in drive.

    command prompt

    sfc /scannow

Just back to compters now !

    Hi

    Having a little ' hobby time ' ~ creative things I can control ;)

I only had the error when I was downloading SunJava - as it was installing I got the IKernel - cannot read etc
The program installed & is working !

I also had the same message ( even when this install was fresh )when upgrading my modem drivers on my desktop PC - but as before the modem installed & is working. I know the modem driver gets the ' Not digitally signed warning ' The DT PC has the full XP ( have the CD ) BUT my LT came with pre-installed therefore I only have 2 discs which I had to write from the info. stored in a 2GB partition when the LT arrived.

One I had to label 'Boot disc' the other is asked for when re-installing XP in full. I know this as I had to use the discs a few months back to re-intsall everything. Once you make the discs from the partition you are no longer able to use the rescue disc supplied. I asked for the OEM XP disc & was told all I need was the discs which I made - must be XP but made by me

I presume this would limit me to doing a repair with an XP CD .... I do have a link to ' smart restore ' as supplied by them. I have only used this to do a complete re-install - I think it may let me just repair. I am afraid to look in case everything disppears !

I think you are right ' if everything works ..... I will know if I am installing & the error appears again that I will HAVE to do something. For now things seem fine. Definitely not the shut down problem I had yesterday.

XP is sensitve but OEM's are very sensitive to things being changed .... at least I can use my computer so far

Just when you thought I had vanished with no further questions or problems .... Sorry !

Note to Mike - XP will have a Windows folder by default rather than Winnt unless the OS was an upgrade from an earlier NT/2K version.
