I turned this service off and now it won't let me back into services to turn it back on.

How do I get back in?

Hi Bill. What happens when you open the services window? Can you boot into Safe Mode and then see if you can open the services window? Have you tried running Last Known Good Configuration?

When I first boot, I get an error that says:

C:\Windows\system 32\config\system profile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable.

When I try to go to that location, I can't get past the config folder. It says I don't have permission but to click on continue to gain permanent permission. Clicking continue closes the message window but does nothing.

Typing services.msc in the run command box gives me another error window that says C:\Windows\system32\services.msc
"The dependency service or group failed to start "

Thats because I turned the User profile service off.

I haven't tried to get into safe mode. I will try it like you get into safe with Vista.

Bill, for the first error message read this, Desktop Refers to a Location That is Unavailable.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of information regarding your second error message that you are getting. See if resolving the first error message resolves your problem. Also see if you can access services.msc from Safe Mode or not.

I can't get into regedit and I tried to get into safe mode using f8 but it doesn't go there.

It looks like you may have really messed up your system. Do you have a Windows 7 DVD that you can boot from?

No DVD and the Recovery partition was deleted before I got to it.

I made and acronis image of the C drive but it is on an external USB HDD and it is not showing up in My Computer.

If I can't find a way to get back into services.msc I guess Best Buy will have to reload the OS from scratch. The comp is only about 3 days old.

As a last ditch effort to get your system working again boot into normal mode. Then click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Right click Command Prompt and select run as administrator. After the command prompt window opens type the following command and press enter. sfc /scannow. After SFC finishes reboot the computer and then see if you can open regedit and the services.msc window.

You should be able to solve it with a System Restore, using a restore point prior to the change.

    Thanks Arie and Evan Omo

I fixed it by going into safe mode and system restore. Talked to HP rep for an hour and he told me how to get there.

That's one thing windows could fix. Make it a lot easier to get into safe mode. Shouldn't have to tap on F8 for a long time to get there.
