Please will someone tell me what I can do. When I go to Start > Settings > Mouse > Properties > Pointers (in Windows XP Home Ed, Dutch Language) a pop-up window says:
"The C:\Windows\System32\Windows-default-file, which contains the Pointer Alternative Selection, is not present or is damaged." All the windows on my desktop are "frozen" and the only way to get the system running again is to to go to Start > Shutdown > Restart.
My (Logitech) mouse and the pointer-in-use otherwise funtions OK. Only I am unable to access the Pointers-file.
I do hope that someone is willing to help me solve my problem.
    Thanks

Run chkdsk on the file system to see if there are any errors. Then I would reinstall your Logitech software to get your pointers working again.

Many, many thanks to Eric Bursley, because everything is working fine again. The error message is gone and I can access the Windows pointer file as before.
In case others encounter the same problem:
I uninstalled Logitech Mouseware v9.60; checked in Settings > Mouse > Pointers if the Windows default file was back (in my case: yes); installed Logitech Mouseware (the new) v9.61; checked if the Windows default file was still there (yes again).
I am very grateful for your great help !
