XP Professional gets the following error message when restarting:

Invalid Boot.ini which usually changes to:

    Missing or corrupt Windows root\system32\hal.dll

I have tried the Microsoft fix #Q330184 - does not change situation...

To restart, I must use the XP software CD and proceed as if I am reinstalling the OS, but then selecting "R" to repair the existing install. This will restrat the machine but the condition returns when attempting to re boot.

Does anybody have any ideas as to how to repair the situatiion perminently?

I am not sure I understand the sequence of events. When you press "R ", does it bring you to the Recovery Console or does it do a complete repair installation of XP?

Have you tried running chkdsk from the RC?

    How about fixboot and fixmbr?

Do you have dual boot with other OS? Replace file ntldr,or modify
    boot.bak to boot.ini

    Thanks for the reply(s)...

No, this is not dual boot..

I mentioned what I have tried, ie: Microsoft's fix #Q330184 and simply reinstalling (repairing) the OS.

Relative to the "R ", Microsoft fix Q330184 uses the recovery council. That works fine but that proceedure simply does not improve the restart situation in this case.

If I restart the computer with the XP CD, I can get the compouer to restart the OS by proceeding as if to reinstall the OS but selecting "R" to repair the old installation. This works to get the OS back up again but upon restart, I get the came missing or corrupt Hal.dll message..

Possibly setup is not detecting your motherboard correctly, or you may have an older version of ACPI. Run the repair installation again, but this time when the message appears along the bottom to press F6 for RAID, press F5 (you'll need to be fast pressing the key, but there will be a delay before the options appear). This will allow you to choose a HAL. Probably only 2 choices will be visible. You may need to scroll to see the others. If your computer is ACPI-compliant, then choose that one. If it isn't, or you don't know, or just to be on the safe side, choose Standard Computer.
