I am missing the file, view, edit menu as well as all other toolbars whenever I open Windows Explorer (file manager, not internet browser).
I don't know what I did to make this happen.
I've tried finding an options to change this but as I have no menus I see no option to add or remove menus or toolbars.
Does anyone know how I can get my menu and toolbar to display again in Windows Explorer?
All I have is the active window coloured bar across the top of the window whether maximised or windowed.
I have had a look about in the registry but can't find a key for this if I am looking in the right spot.
Anyone out there that can help me with this ??

    Cheers

    That helped

    Hi Daizy,

Well that certainly got something back. Looks more like Internet Explorer toolbar but at least I have a toolbar now and some file control.

    Thanks

This is probably linked to a corrupt entry for the ITBarLayour Sub-Key for Windows Explorer.

Navigate to this key and remove ITBarLayout in the right pane.

Removing this key will not harm any of your other settings. If you have made any changes to the toolbar layout, they will be restored to default and you will need to re-establish the changes you require once more.

Might need a reboot to complete but not sure, as we carried out this activity whilst fixing another issue on a PC which required a reboot.

As this is the registry, you should backup the Registry before you start this activity.

    --- oooOOOooo ---

    Open up RegEdit.

    Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar.

For Windows Explorer delete the ITBarLayout value in the Explorer sub-key.

    Thanks I_ATE_A_LOT

I have spent ages looking about in the registry but couldn't find anything obvious but not being a registry expert it was mostly a case of poke and hope.

    I'll give it a go.

    Thanks and cheers

    Thanks I_ATE_A_LOT

I don't know ... give the guy some help and he still gets your name wrong. :)

I have spent ages looking about in the registry but couldn't find anything obvious but not being a registry expert it was mostly a case of poke and hope.

We have all got to start from the beginning on everything we do. I broke my teeth on the Win95 Registry, and had worked on Win3.11 INI files before that, and MS-DOS didn't even have that much...

Poking and prodding on this one, and other things, was difficult enough but I threw a couple of Internet Searches out for "Missing menu bar" and started browsing some of the returned web pages and newsgroups. This has been a more recent posting for a number of people so you are not alone.

If I knew the format of this sequence of information we could have changed only the little bit you needed to display your Menu options but even that is a bit on the

Oops Sorry I-ATE-THE-LOT I think I got it right now

Yes, registry is something I only go when I have no option.

At work we use NT, same deal really, and windows explorer by default expands the C: drive which annoys me.
I found that key once and stopped it and then had to rebuild the pc and haven't found the key since.
    Any hints ?

    Cheers Joe

    Show and Tell time...

DownUnder I'll share something with you that may help you to change how your work machine opens Explorer. It doesn't require any Registry licks so you'll like it. :)

Create a new shortcut on your Desktop.

Then type or paste the following line into the target/command line:

    C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE /n,/e,/root,,/select,C:\

When you use this shortcut to access Windows Explorer, it will open up with all tree branches collapsed. You can even drag and drop this shortcut on the START button and have access to it when the Desktop may be obscured.

You may change the word "select" to "open" and it will start with the drive opened.

You may also change the drive specified after the "select" or "open" command and have it select or open any drive you choose. In addition, you can add further path information to include a directory or further subdirectories.

You can create any number of these shortcuts, even change their icons, and have a way to quickly access your favorite files, with a single click.

This command line is version specific to Win95 and NT and will not work properly on other versions. There are different command line switches for those other versions here . For more on Win95 and NT command line switches go here
