    Hi
Recently everytime I open my computer I get this message that tells me file VSHINIT.VXD is missing and I need it to run windows. It says that my system.ini refers to it. If I click return, it contines to open and everything is ok. I recently had to reformat my computer and I took out Mccafees (spell wrong I think). Would that have anything to do with it? HELP

Sure would have something to do with it!

    That is a Mcafee file.

    D/L install and run RegCleaner:

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by the uninstaller. Look for Mcafee.

Also tag and remove any that you are POSITIVE are not supposed to be on your computer. Have any doubts leave them alone.

After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

Then still in RegCleaner go to Startup List and remove any entries to do with Mcafee.

That's for sure a McAfee created problem. Evidently you didn't get it uninstalled all the way.

    Now do this:

Go to Start, click Run and type in SYSEDIT. Click on System.ini file, scroll down the entries and if you find VSHINIT.VXD, type REM at front of the line.

Exit and save if you made any changes.

Then go to Start, click Run and type in Regedit. Then highlight the My Computer line so as to focus on it and then click Edit, Find and type in VSHINIT.VXD and search for it. At each find, delete the file then depress the F3 to continue the search. When no more new ones are found, exit the Registry. Restart the machine.

That should clean you up and get rid of the error message on opening of Windows. You may also choose to run a Registry cleaner, especially if you still have problems. I recommend RegCleaner for that but be sure you as before dumping anything you're not sure of.

    Cheers.
    :)

THAT LITTLE SUCKER IS HISTORY!!!!! Thank you, both of you, for helping me. I already had RegCleaner here, got it a long time ago. I use it quite frequently and thought I got them all out. I'm sure as I continue I will find a few more quirks. Thank you all, I appreciate the help. That was driving me nuts!!!!
