My computer is missing this file and it appears to be the reason why I can't access mouse options anymore. As I do not have a Windows XP CD, but the HP recovery discs that have lots of trialware and only have SP1 (quick way to get a worm if I installed them), i'd appreciate it if some kind soul could send me a copy.

The file main.cpl is a system protected file. If it is missing, chances are you have other missing system files as well. If you have no XP install CD, you can borrow one from someone and do a Repair Install that will likely get your system back in shape. Anything less will be less.

    In case of cpl corruption....

This is a protected system file and should be located in the windows\system32 folder. Just rename it to (main.bak) and it will be replaced immediately.

Sorry suferdude2...Busy typing in post, but before hitting "save" I had to double check advice by doing this on my own comp. I just noticed your post. I will leave this thread in since I am now committed to leave something here.... :)

I forgot to add the below:
    See:
To make sure you have the ability to view hidden files by adjusting preference options in....
1>Click on My Computer icon or right click startbutton and choose "explore ".
    2>click on menu toolbar> "tools "
    3>click on "Folder options "
    4>click on "View" Tab:
5>and scroll to the [Hidden Files and Folders] section and enable or disable the options below by unchecking or checking as designated:
"Do Not show hidden files "=unchecked (or click the "show hidden files ")
"hide file extensions for known files "=unchecked
"hide protected system folders "=unchecked (optional, users choice)

    Good News

I obtained a Windows XP Home disc and used
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
and I got mouse settings back along with the fonts folder and the admin tools folder. Yay! Now i'll just have to hunt down the utilities I used to modify tcpip.sys and uxtheme.dll.

You'll fine your Tcp/IP Modification Tool Here.

    and the UXtheme Here.

Good luck with the system. I have serious doubts with any system that is missing protected files but perhaps you'll get lucky.

    All the best,

    Dude
