Right click on a blank space on one of the top tool bars in IE and see if it is checked.

I don't want the Favorites bar to be displayed.

    Have you seen this:
How to Solve Favorites Menu is Missing in IE

How did you move them? Did you use the Move button in its folder properties/location tab? Were there any instances of IE running processes at the time? Some apps use IE as a process.

TonyT, the link that you gave me seems to be for older versions of IE as the page is dated Friday, January 28, 2011. I would anyway try it.

I moved the Favorites by Move button in Windows Explorer. Everything was closed at that time & I moved the folder as soon as I installed Win 8.

Try moving it back to the default location. If it takes, then move it again where you want it.

    No joy, Tony.

Favourites appear normally when in default location, but as soon as I moved them, they disappeared again.

I suspect that a registry key is not getting updated when changing the location. Other possibility is a permissions issue with the alternate location, IE will need r/w access.

Move the folder again and have a look at the values of Favorites in these 2 keys & see it they show the path to the folder:

    hkcu/software/microsoft/windows/current version/explorer/shell folders/

    hkcu/software/microsoft/windows/current version/explorer/user shell folders/

Change to the desired path if need be. May have to then kill explorer.exe and restart it for the changes to take effect.

As my default browser is Firefox, I am letting this IE thing go to sleep for now as another MS Metro/Desktop quirk instead of wasting mine & others time on it.

Both the keys are set correctly & point to the new location but still no joy.

Maybe MS would do something in Blue to set it right.

    Thanks.
I officially can let this issue sleep now! (I only use IE to test compatibility as I create Websites)
