When I upgraded from FF 3.0.11 to 3.5 I built a new profile and imported my old bookmarks with no difficulty. The strange thing is that I show NO bookmarks.html file in my 3.5 profile. This is true on both of my computers.

What makes it doubly strange is that I can export the bookmarks just as easily as I imported them.

If anyone can shed any light on this puzzlement, I'd really appreciate it.

Starting in Firefox 3, bookmarks are stored in the places.sqlite file.

    Who knew?:)

That said, why do I still have a bookmarks.html file in my FF 3.0.x profile?

Interesting, because I started 3.0 and its successors with a clean profile.

    Greetings Jim,

I am not a great fan of FF NEW bookmarks. But that is just MHO - others may differ.

A couple of things I did discover is that when you IMPORT bookmarks - they are placed in a separate folder at the lower end of the bookmarks list - and can then be moved .....
(may have changed, not real sure)
I prefer them at the top in the Bookmarks toolbar.
**** BACK UP YOUR PROFILE BEFORE YOU DINK AROUND****
Easy way to get them in the Bookmarks Toolbar is as follows:

    1. Close FF
    2. Open Firefox profile in your favorite File Manager.
    3. DELETE ALL *.json files in [bookmarkbackups] folder.
    4. DELETE "places.sqlite "
    5. COPY the "bookmarks.html" file that you want to use and "paste" into profile...overwrite existing if needed.

    6. Start FF - the bookmarks shud be in the Bookmarks Toolbar.

As for the "Bookmarks.html" - I believe that they are not automagicaly saved at close by default.

    Please see: "firefox.js " file

// By default, do not export HTML at shutdown.
// If true, at shutdown the bookmarks in your menu and toolbar will
// be exported as HTML to the bookmarks.html file.
    pref( "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML ", false);

Adjust to your liking via "config editor "

But then again, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong

    Hi Cap'n,

Thanks for the detailed reply, but much of it doesn't seem to apply to my situation.
    1. I don't use the bookmarks toolbar, as I consider it a waste of space. I much prefer the bookmarks menu.

    2. The only .json file in my profile is search.json.

    3. There is no firefox.js file in my profile.
All that said, my bookmarks work perfectly, and can easily be edited in the "Library" (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks).

Probably because I've got browser.bookmarks.max_backups set to 0 in about:config.

Thanks. FWIW, I found a bookmarks.html file in (install location)\defaults\profile\, but it's not my bookmarks file ... seems to be a generic file.

Would that it were true. I've got a completely different issue with FF 3.5, which I'll post in a separate thread, so as not to muddy the waters.

    Jim,

You've been around long enought to have a good handle on things, so I will leave you to your devices.

Let me know when you get the other problem posted.

I can confirm Js findings. There does not seem to be a discrete bookmarks file in 3.5. I have the usual last five days backups in the .json format, and bookmarks can be imported and exported in the .html format. That's good enough for me.
