As Arte Johnson used to say, "Verrrry Interestink!" I expected that when I finally "bit-the-bullet" I would have that funky combo WIN8/WIN10 desktop to look at and, indeed, that's what I got.... until it told me to restart the machine.

I did so and when it came back to life, I had my WIN7 desktop back with all the icons I had previously on the desktop... except that I can't bring up a second window anymore.

In ALL previous windows (up to WIN 7... I never had the (censored) to go to WIN 8) I used to left-click on, say, file explorer, which would bring up a splash screen which would allow me to start a second instance of file explorer, and then I could transfer files/folders between folders via drag 'n drop. I don't seem to be able to figure out how to do this in WIN 10.

I had thought I was not able to do the "alt-tab" to switch between wiondows but I now seem to have no problem with that one.

While I'm sure I'll discover other things that don't quite work as I might expect, not being able to open multiple instances of a particular application is the one driving me nuts right now.

Just downloaded and installed WIN10 from an ISO on Tuesday.

Have you had a look in System > Multitasking?

Click on File Explorer icon in the Task bar to open a File Explorer window.

To open a second File Explorer Window right click on the File Explorer icon in the Task bar and click on File Explorer in the sub menu which opens. This opens a second File Explorer window.

    >Retired Learner: Is that SYSTEM in Control Panel? Can't find anything in there on "Multitasking "...

    >eisneun: Works perfectly... is this something I simply overlooked ? I went to quite a few WIN10 sites as well as Windows Lounge and others but found naught on the subject.

    >PeteC: Thanks, old friend, but that was the initial problem; can't get the "old standby" to work in WIN10. When I have ANY window open, right clicking on another icon in the task bar produces no result. F'rinstince, If I wanted to open WINWORD to compose this reply (which I often do if I feel the complexity warrants) and then C+P to the "message" box, I can no longer do so. R/click produces no result by itself. It WERE the way as you describe, but no more. Eiseun's method DOES work, so I'm presuming that this method replaced the older one. Just wonder why I missed this in my read-ups prior to falling down the rabbit hole.

In W10 > Start > Settings > System > Multitasking. Or click on New Notifications > Settings > System > Multitasking.
No need for Control Panel. Neil.

No - right click on a Taskbar icon should open up a sub menu as shown below. Does right click work as expected elsewhere - say on the Desktop?

    'Allo, all...

Well, curiouser and curiouser, as says Alice... I suddenly was getting a non response when working with Eiseun's tip, and so restarted the OS... and thought I'd done for myself, as when the (xxx) thing started, and all I had was a black screen and the cursor. Each time I clicked with the cursor in the LOWER CENTRAL part of the screen, I got decreasing concentric circles (five steps, I think) but clicking in the upper or left or right hustings just gave me a circle which immediately disappeared.

"Well," says I, "You've done it well and truly this time! ", so I restarted all (naught to lose, eigh?) and not only do I now have my desktop back, Retired Learner's "notification" applet now appears in the lower RIGHT taskbar (right next to the date) AND I now have the splash screen Pete C and I have been on about all along.

This is MOST confusing and I presume that as time goes on, things will continue to appear and disappear in the charming way we've come to expect from the "Redmond Rockettes ".

( "Kick... kick... kick turn, restart, KICK turn... ", with apologies to Mel Brooks.)

A Shut down or Restart is MS 1st. recommendation if the OS does not respond correctly. It's always the easiest option to try before panic mode sets in. Neil.

I prefer the method espoused in your avatar, although I DO tend to substitute a Harley-Davidson Fine Adjustment Tool for the fist. Surprised you don't use a Mere!
