Some of the PC's I see in our Computer Forum (Silver Surfers) have masses of programmes installed, it is difficult to explain what programmes are absolutely required to run the basic PC, other programmes are added during the life of a PC, and all are listed in 'Add/Remove' some without any GB size.

    Such as=
Microsoft Visual C++2005 and 2008 Redistributable are listed.
A number of Microsoft. NET Framework ( no size)
Also Service Packs, and MSXML SP2 together with Security updates., are listed.
I realise that programmes related to Printers etc; are required, but how can I get them back to basics to start again?
At present these are on PC's with XP OS, but I have found them on other OS.

Hi Spanner. Every computer has a different set of so called minimum programs that are necessary for the machine to work properly.

The list of programs that you would find on most computers would be hardware drivers, Microsoft .Net Framework updates, Microsoft Visual C++ updates, MSXML parser updates, and Windows Updates.

Some other popular software programs that you would see on some systems would be Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Microsoft Office, Open Office, and security programs.

If you see other programs that the user does not recognize then chances are they are not needed and can be uninstalled.

Anything that has "Toolbar" in its description should be destroyed with extreme prejudice.:)
