When I have more that 1 WORD doc minimized and I open a new Word doc the minimized docs open also. I have searched and cannot find a way to stop this. Any ideas out there?

Don't know what to tell you except to hit (Windows key + M) and minimize all windows. Then, just restore the one you want to use.

    Hi mommacache ...

Welcome to the BBS. Is that a play on "Mama Cass "?

I'm unable to duplicate your problem (but I have to confess that I'm still using Word 97). No matter how many Word docs I have open, there's only one Word button on the Taskbar. When I minimize any or all of them, they're minimized to the bottom of the Word window, and opening a new Word doc leaves the others minimized.

I'm using Office XP and unlike JSS3rd, I have my system set to make me a taskbar icon for each item rather than grouping them. I can reopen any of them or even launch word again and do a different document without the others opening.

Since two folks with different word versions and different taskbar settings don't have the problem, I don't think we are looking at any sort of normal Word behavior so something else is busted.

    Pro or Home? SP1 running?

Have you tried doing a repair of MS Office?

How about start~run~sfc /scannow with your XP CD in the drive (and note the blank space between sfc and /)

    Newt ...

I think we have the same Taskbar settings ... my system is also set to create a Taskbar icon for each item, rather than grouping them.

I said previously that "No matter how many Word docs I have open, there's only one Word button on the Taskbar ", but I have to qualify that.

Normally, I open Word 97 by double-clicking on a *.doc file in Windows Explorer. This opens the document in a sub-window within the Word program window. The same behavior occurs if Word is opened first and then a document is opened from within Word ... the document opens in a sub-window. Any additional documents opened, by either method, will open in their own sub-windows within that single Word window.

In Word 97 those document windows minimize to the bottom of the Word window, not to the taskbar. Minimizing the Word window, itself, removes access to the docs until the window is restored or maximized, either by clicking on it or by opening a new Word document from Windows Explorer or from a Desktop icon. As you might expect, closing the Word window also closes all open Word documents.

Now, the qualification ... Word can be re-launched one or more times, resulting in additional program windows and Taskbar buttons.

So, in Word 97 you have the choice of
    • 1. having all Word documents (each in its own sub-window) open in the same program window.

      2. having each document open in a different Word window, but you have to re-launch Word each time you want to open a new document.

Thanks for your ideas. I am actually asking this for a friend and she is checking to see if she has Home or Professional. but does have Windows update automatically set so I can only assume she has SP1.

I have suggested to her that she run a repair on Office and we will see what happens from there. This is just one of those annoying things that drives you nuts.

And yes, it is a play on Mama Cass. Guess that dates me :D

"Stars shining bright above you, night breezes seem to whisper..." It's okay, I'm dated, too!

The Office Repair is the first suggestion I would make. Post back and let us know if that works, or not.

Nah, neither of you is dated (I might be, though ... Cass was one day shy of being six years younger than me), because her music (particularly after she went out on her own) is timeless, unlike the C-Rap so popular today. My favorite? The almost never heard "Cherries Jubilee ".

I vote for Office Repair, too.
