Minimize and removing Outlook from taskbar.

I am using Outlook 2007 beta, and I have a question.

I like to keep Outlook running all the time, set to check for e-mail every five minutes. However, when I minimize Outlook, the "Outlook Today - Microsoft Outlook" program appears in the taskbar, as well as the small icon to the right of the taskbar, next to the clock. What I want to do is keep Outlook minimized with that small icon, but I don't want it appearing in the taskbar, so I have room for other programs. Sort of like MSN Messenger; you can minimize it and have it running, with the icon by the clock, but it removes itself from the taskbar.

All minimised programs appear in the Task Bar - otherwise you would have no means of restoring them :)

Outlook, which I do not use, appears to be fairly unique in that it puts an icon in the Notification Tray.

Some of the Outlook gurus may have some other ideas :)

Notification Tray, that's what I was trying to remember the name of!

I know that all programs stay in the taskbar, but some programs remove themselves from the taskbar and put an icon in the tray, so you still have access to it and to close it, set options, whatever. That's what I want Outlook to do. Minimize it so it's "hidden" from the taskbar, but keep the icon in the tray. As it is right now, clicking the X closes Outlook completely, and clicking the _ minimizes it without removing it from the tray. I recall in Outlook 2003 that there was an option to enable tray icons, at which point you could minimize it and it would keep Outlook open and running in the background with an icon in the tray, but not in the taskbar.

As I said - wait for an Outlook user to respond :)

BTW - get rid of your email address from your signature - making it public invites all the spammers in. We do not use email to respond to problems - please see my signature.

If anyone on the Board needs your email address they can access it through your User CP - if you allowed it during signing up.

I know, I was just further explaining the question since you reminded of me of the words I was looking for whenever I said "next to clock ". ;)

Have you look through all the options under Tools->Options?
MS added this feature starting in version 2003...Its possible its not working yet in the beta program.

I searched under Options. I even checked the Customize section (which is just the toolbar and commands).

But you're right, it may not be in the 2007 beta. Perhaps it caused instability, or they just haven't added it yet.

    Easy as pie!

Right-Click on the Outlook icon in the Notification Tray, and select Hide when minimized. Now you're all set. :)

I'm pretty sure that pie is a little more complex though!

I now consider myself an idiot for never bothering to check that. You, sir, are my hero.

Really, though, thanks. It's been bugging me since I posted the thread.
