This is strange and frusterating all at the same time. When I'm in Windows Explorer and select a movie file a quick preview opens up on the left of the window. No big deal. But after it opens the first screen of the video and I select another video my box hangs for upwards of 1 and a half minutes. When this happens everything stops, my internet connection, mouse doesn't respond, network doesn't respond. Then after the minute or so everything goes back to normal.

    My Rig
    Dual PIII 1.0 GHz
    512 MB Registered ECC DIMM
    20GB HD (Primary)
40GB HD (Primary on RAID controller)
    Soundblaster Live Plantinum
    32MB TNT2 Ultra
    Dual NIC

    Events Empty

I cleared the events and then selected a video. I waited until the preview opened then selected another video. The system hung and then I checked the Events.......Nothing.

In that case, I really have to suspect your video card/drivers. Things to try (in no particular order):

    1. Check for newer drivers
    2. Play with the card settings
    3. Try a different card.
    4. Remove and re-seat the video card. Maybe clean the contacts with a pencil eraser while you have it out.
    5. Open task manager and watch CPU activity while you open a video. Then watch "processes" while doing the same. Set the processes to sort by memory and again by cpu useage.
    6. Make your pagefile larger. Move it off the system partition if possible.

Did everything you suggested. Still same problem mind you it only really started when i installed SP3.
Memory usage doesn't move, and CPU usage only goes up 1%.

It almost seems that when changing files the computer halts. All processes freeze then continue as if nothing happened.

Well dang Dcrypter. I'm stuck, I'm stumped, and I'm surprised/sorry none of that helped you out.

Whatever the problem, it is strange. You mention dual NICs in the PC but I'm assuming that is for ICS hosting or something and I can't really see how that could cause your problem. May be but that cause/fix is beyond me.

Best I can suggest at this point is to open a call with Microsoft Tech Support. Should be free since it appears to be OS related. And they have some seriously smart techs.

The only similar issues they have published as Q articles deal with a specific series of laptops or with changing screen resolution while playing a movie. But they maintain documentation for a huge number of issues that aren't published to their online help section.

If you do that, give the things from here you have tried without any help.
