I have been using 98SE since it was available as an upgrade to 95, but alas, it will no longer support an upgrade to one of my favorite programs. Quite a while back I purchased a 2000 PRO upgrade, but never got around to installing it. Just checked the compatibility utility for 2000, and the report was not encouraging. Many problems with a firewire card I use for video capture and unbelievably, a fairly new monitor, and software. Some of these can be overcome with upgrades, a lot of them, but what a nuisance. Assuming there would still be some problems, would the upgrade path be easier if I went with XP instead? Which version would make sense for me? I use Office 2000 PRO, PhotoShop, and do some digital video capture and editing and editing of the DV sound. I am thinking that the "home" edition should be adequate. Is there a compelling reason for me to get a more advanced version?

I feel like an idiot, because I originally posted this in the ME forum, but I really had XP in mind.

    Thanks for any comments

Go for XP Home unless you feel the extra security of Pro is important to you.

The transition from your existing system should be relatively painless - XP has many drivers on board and XP drivers can be found on most manufacturer's web sites. Good idea to collect the drivers first before making the change and burn to CD.

Unless your 98SE is performing faultlessly a clean install as opposed to an upgrade is best. The Upgrade CD will permit a full, clean install providing you have a 95 or 98 install CD as 'evidence'.
