I read about the The Microsoft Office Converter Pack in the latest newsletter and have a question about it. We recently got a new computer with WinXP Home edition. It includes MS Works Suite 2003. We're thinking of installing our old reliable MS Office 97 on the new computer to give us more functions than Works provides. (Haven't installed it yet but assume it will work OK under WinXP ?) And we're wondering if the Office Converter Pack will make Office 97 stuff more compatible with newer Office versions? Otherwise, for us, is there any other good reason to install this Converter pack?

OK, I guess that's 3 questions! But we just want to know the benefits for us as home users with the older Office 97......

Can you enlighten us in these matters, please?

The Office Converter Packs for Office 97, 2000, and XP have been retired from the Microsoft Download Center due to the recent discovery of a potential security vulnerability. If you need access to converters or filters for Office products, you can find an updated version of the tools in the beta release of the Office 2003 Resource Kit tools. The Office 2003 version of the converter tools will also work with Office 97, 2000, and XP applications.

Information on the Office 2003 Resource Kit tools and a link to the download can be found in the topic Download the Office 2003 Resource Kit Tools on the Office XP Resource Kit Web site. When you install the tools, the executable file for the updated Office Converter Pack is copied to your computer. Run Oconvpck.exe from the \Program Files\ORKTools\ORK11\TOOLS\Office Converter Pack folder on your computer to install the collection of converters and filters.

A list of all updated converters and filters in the converter pack can be found in the topic Office Converter Pack on the Office 2003 Resource Kit Beta Web site.

Note The converter pack for Office 2003 also works for Office 97, Office 2000, and Office XP, whose converter packs have been retired.

Well, this is what's on the MS Web site about it:

I haven't worked with them myself, so can't comment about it.
