    Dear Sirs,

I am using Microsoft Office 2003 from Office Professional and for some reason I am having trouble finding how to do a few things. For one, when I open word the normal window opens but also on the right of that is another window which opens called getting started. I can close it but I want to set it where it will not open when I open word and I can't find where. Also would like to know how to make changes to my normal.dot.

I want to change font and font size but it will not save. Any direction? I do appreciate your time. Thanks and have a great day!!

    JJ  :)

I don't have Office 2003, but in Office 2000 here is how you change the font, etc. for the normal.dot template:

Click on "format" and choose "font ". At the bottom of that screen, there is a button that says "default ". Click on this and it will ask you if you want to use this font for all of your documents; when you click "yes ", that is the font that will show up every time you open a new document.

As far as the getting started window, I'm not sure about that, but I got rid of the Office Assistant (which may be a similar thing) by turning it off on the "help" menu. You might look to see if there is the option on the "help" menu to turn off the getting started screen.

Lots of information in the Microsoft article, Frequently asked questions about the task pane in Word 2002 and in Word 2003.

    Included is:
How Can I Turn Off the Task Pane?

The task pane cannot be turned off (disabled). You can hide the task pane when you do not need it. If you use a feature that requires the task pane, the task pane automatically reopens.

To hide the task pane, do one of the following:
    • Click the Close button (the X in the upper-right corner of the task pane).

    -or-
    • On the View menu, click Task Pane.

For the font problem. With Word closed, delete (or rename) the normal.dot file. When you open Word, it will create a new normal.dot. When that file gets corrupted (which happens, usually for reasons unknown), all sorts of strange things happen. Making Word create a new normal.dot may be all that's needed.

    1 out of 2

Thanks for the Info. Miz. Deleting the normal.dot and letting word recreate it now lets me modify fonts etc..for my template configuration. As far as the Task Pane..I still would like for it not to come up with each open of the word session. Not sure when it started or why but I don't know why it continues to want to open when word is opened. Thanks! Have a great day!!

    :)
