Microsoft Word Problems

2 problems with word.
1. When I type an x (as in 3x + 7 = 10) -- word automatically makes the x into a little box. I can't find the option to change that.

2. Somehow, when I scanned some things to make letterhead, I managed to default that to my "blank document" So now when I ask for a blank document I get that letterhead. I can't figure out how to get my blank document back.
