I have written several letters in Word in the last month. Now that I want to go back and open these documents there is a horizontal squigle and a dollar sign where the first two letter of the name of the document was and when I open the document there are a number of small squares. I have no clue what to do and also wonder if the documents will be lost if I uninstall and then reinstall Word.:

Judith - Welcome to the Board :)

The files you are seeing (~$...) are the temporary files that Word opens when you create a document. Normally they are deleted when Word is closed and the document is saved. If Word crashes they will be retained on your hard drive. When you try to open them you are basically seeing the code.

Assuming that you saved the documents you should find them on your drive - search for .doc files. Alternatively if they are fairly recent they may be in the list of Recent Files under the File Menu in Word.

You will not lose your documents if you uninstall/reinstall Word, but I doubt that it will resolve your problem. You can Repair Word from the Help menu > Detect and Repair, but again this is unlikely to resolve your problem.
