In the past two days received notification that new update was available. 1. Important update is available : Windows Malicious Software Removal Toolx64 - July 2012 (KB890830). Clicking to downoad. After several minutes, screen displays downloading, caption : do not close computer or disconnect. After two hours caption remains displayed on screen, similar to a "freeze ". Restarted computer, required to reset information in IE, and two external drives were no longer recognised by Windows, later HDs are. Same update repeats in Windows Update, installing again repeats error.
One of external HD now displays :

Tried to open files, access denied. Now ignoring update notification. Assistance in solving, will be most appreciated.

Hi mickzer, thank you for prompt response, most appreciated. Carried out your suggestion, appears computer error was cleaned by software. Will await and see if error repeats itself. How important is Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool required? Regards.

Tried again MS Update, error still persists and unable to remove or hide offending update. Cleared external HD not recognised after shutdown not closed properly -- cleared error by removing power and connecting power again to HD in question.

This is a piece of scanning software which is updated each month and scans the computer for any nasties. Once the scan is completed the software is removed by the process AFAIK.

Given that you have a sound AV which is current in terms of definitions MMRT is really only a double check and IMHO by no means essential under those circumstances. It is aimed at non savvy users who either have no av or do not keep it updated.

Are the undernoted references added to my external hard drive important? Each time that I improperly close down computer due to a freeze caused by MS update Malicious Removal Tool, an additional reference is shown in external hard drive. References can not be read as access is denied.

They are most likely temporary files relating to the MRT which would have been deleted had the Tool completed successfully.

I would be inclined to head over to the Malware & Virus Forum for a checkup - it is possible that you are infected. Have you run Malwarebytes?

Final request, can Malicious Removal Tool be stopped from being shown in Microsoft Updates? Use of Anti-Malware Pro software shows no infections and Microsoft Securities has not indicated any problems. Regards.

If you set Microsoft Update to 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them' then you can uncheck or hide the MRT - if hidden will not be shown.

    Access settings .....

Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings in LH column > dialogue shown below.
