    Hello.
I can't get into the internet or any other program that uses the internet. When I try to open IE6, an error pops up:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
The application has requested the Runtime to terminate it
in an unusual way. Please contact the applications
    support team for more information.

When I click on the OK button, the program closes. This same error message comes up when I try to open other programs needing internet access, except the extension would be the execution file I'm trying to open.

I've run Ad-aware and Spybot and the problem was not solved. I downloaded HiJackThis but have not used it yet because I wouldn't know what to do with it if i did. I was hoping there was some other way I can fix this. I can post the HiJack if needed.

I performed a searched on this forum and found someone with the same problem, but didn't understand how he solved it.
    Please help.. thank you.

Did you use the latest versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot? Older versions will report they are up to date when they really aren't.
Please post the HijackThis log on here. The Scan button changes to Save Log when it done, click on it and it will appear in Notepad. Copy and Paste the log here.

I did some research about that error, and it may be caused by number of factors:
    1. IE corrupted, itself. Did you try IE "repair tool ".
2-3. Conflict with another application, or some **** on your machine....In both cases, posting HT log makes sense.
    4. Sun Java, and MS Java Virtual Machine, installed alongside, causing a conflict. Do you have both of them installed? If so, get rid of M$ JVM, since it's dead, anyway.

Hi. Thank you very much for responding.
Uninstalled Ad Aware and Spybot, downloaded newest versions i can find and ran it again..tried the IE repair tool.. didn't work.
In reference to Java, I went to Internet Options, Advanced, I have only Microsoft VM.

Looks like I have alot of junk in there, but never used HiJack and don't want to touch it without someone's guidance. I thought the one in bold was quite strange. I use both cable and dial-up(AOL). I should get rid of the latter.

Please advise. Thank you again. :)

Your Winsock was damaged by some malware. Download, and run LSP-Fix from HERE

Then, since Micro$oft Java Virtual Machine is not longer developed (a court decission), uninstall it, using removal tool, available HERE
Then install Sun Java, available HERE

I'll take a closer look at your HT log in a moment.

Please, let me know, when you are done with above two steps, then we'll go from there.

The LSPFix worked! Thank you very much.
As for Java, I uninstalled MSJVM and installed Sun on my 2nd computer and also updated to SP3 (as recommended while installing Sun). But, it made some of the web pages and games I usually visit look different, particularly my homepage of msn.com. I preferred how it looked before, so I didn't install it on the "problemed" computer. Did I do something wrong or did I have to configure it in some way? Will it be OK to leave it as is?

Did you see anything else that should be removed on the HiJack?

Thanks again.. you've made my day! :D

    You are very welcome.
As for Java, I don't think, you did something wrong, since it configures by itself.
With leaving MS Java on first machine, you should be OK until the end of 2007, when Micro$oft will cease its support.
You can find more info HERE, and even Micro$oft says on that page:
I'll try to check your HT log tonight.

    Two identical entries. Fix both.

    F1 - win.ini: load=C:\ZIPTOOLS\REGISTER\REMIND.EXE
Safe, but not needed. Fix it.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadPowerProfile] Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
It's not recommended to use Power Management on Windows 98, since it's faulty feature. There are TWO identical "LoadPowerProfile" entries in "msconfig/startup ". Uncheck them both.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mdac_runonce] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\runonce.exe
Uncheck in "msconfig/startup ". Associated with MS Data Access Components (MDAC). Sometimes left over after installation - not required. NOTE :- don't delete "runonce.exe ".

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    Not needed at startup.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime
    Not needed at startup.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
Fix it. Viewpoint Manager for Viewpoint Media Player - spyware as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Netscape 7, etc

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SchedulingAgent] mstask.exe
MS Scheduling Agent displayed as a box with a stopwatch in the System Tray that is only needed if you have regular scheduled disk defragmenting, ScanDisk, etc.

    O4 - Startup: QuickBooks 2002 Delivery Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks Pro\Components\QBAgent\QBDAgent2002.exe
Intuit’s "QuickBooks v8 Delivery Agentâ€. The purpose of this background program is to see if your QuickBooks software needs updating. It does this by contacting Intuit whenever there is an Internet connection present. If your connection to the Internet is by modem, it slows it a little initially. Worse, if it finds updates it downloads them without asking the user, thereby significantly slowing down the user’s connection without the end‑user knowing why. Next, when the user closes QuickBooks, he is prompted with a question about updating QuickBooks "“ many users find this confusing as they did not realise QuickBooks had been downloading updates in the background. Finally, as if the above problems weren’t enough, the QuickBooks Delivery Agent also conflicts with some programs.
While in QuickBooks 2002, choose the "File \ QuickBooks…" menu option, then click on the "Options" button, then make sure Automatic Update is set to OFF. Next, disable QBDAGENT2002 in "msconfig/startup?

    O4 - Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0a\aoltray.exe
Not needed at startup. Puts AOL icon in System Tray. Connect to AOL via the desktop shortcut or Start -> Programs

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
Unless you have the Spybot option "Lock homepage from chenges" active, fix it.

    O13 - WWW. Prefix: http://
    Fix it.

    Thanks broni,

I thought maybe I was losing it! ;) Note that the MajorGeeks download site does say:
This corresponds with the MSKB Article I referenced:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826878

I don't think I would give this link without making a point of telling users that they should use at their own risk, as it is an unsupported removal tool...

    Cheers!

Apologies, I forgot to mention the link for the MSJVM removal tool on your earlier post. I did a search for it and downloaded it from another site.

Disregard what I said on my previous post about my homepage looking irregular. Turned it on earlier and looked fine, maybe needed another reboot. I'll do the switch.

Thanks for info on MSJVM, the HiJack and everything else.

    :)

    LSP Removal Tool

Thanks Broni, that worked great! Saved me hours of having to do a reinstall. Now I have just one more problem to overcome. Can't do a system restore on a laptop running ME. Keep getting the must reboot message.

    Thanks again,
    Bill
