It seems strange that one of the possible fixes on WinXP, installing this hotfix, Q329623, is about DVD playback problems and there´s not a hint about any connection to InstallShield.

Am I the only one who is ...... ......

That's what I thought, so I uninstalled the hotfix and all went smoothly - AFTER I had disabled the antivirus (NAV 2004).

    Hmm - must re-install the fix :D

Maybe the problem is system specific and not all computers with that hotfix will get the same error.

Are You saying that You tried the installation with Norton running and it failed but with Norton disabled it went well?

The first time I tried to install Java VM NAV 2004 requested to scan a file - I allowed it to do so and the install concluded with an error message.

I then realised that I had the Sun Java plug-in on the m/c, although it was not active. Uninstalled that and the Java VM which was also there - so presumably it did install, partly at least.

Thought to disable NAV and all went smoothly the second time around. Was it NAV or the Java plug in that caused the problem ? I've no idea.

Anti virus software have been known to corrupt installations so, I wouldn´t rule it out. Under the motto "better safe than sorry" I always pull the broadband cable and disable anti virus and firewall before installing anything.

Someone actually said to do so when defragmenting too. A lot of reading and writing goes on and that just might trigger the AV to mess things up. I don´t know if it could happen but again, "better ......

Was Microsoft Virtual Machine integrated in WinXP RTM (the first release) or was it an addition in SP1?

If it was integrated in WinXP RTM, will installing SP1a remove it?

    Thanks,
    Christer

As usual, an answer to one of my questions generates at least one more question ...... ......

    From Arie's article:

If I do it like this, java.inf vill be left in the \%Systemroot%\inf folder.
    Is that correct?

I have browsed the web for answers to my own questions ...... :) ...... and I found one:

MVM was not included in the first release of Windows XP.
It was added in SP1 and removed from SP1a.

Been away a few days .....

No - there is no java.inf in my folder now. Presumably deleting the *.PNF file or the Registry Change removed it ?

    Hi Pete,
    welcome back ......:D ...... !

Either that or the uninstall itself since the java.inf contains installation information.
