Yes, I read it. The conclusion is that (for now) the updates are worthwhile and are not spyware. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, though.

If MS wanted to install something without our knowledge, I don't think they would have much of a problem doing just that.

This week, I had reason to roll back (Ghost) my system a few months which included reinstalling the updates released from that time onwards. I had them all downloaded to my local hard disk and installed from there. I went online to verify at Windows Update that I had not missed any of them. The "WGA thingy" was forced upon my system but when that one had been installed, nothing else was needed. I cannot remember exactly when I did this but the two "7.0.6000.381-folders" mentioned in that article have a "created-time-stamp" 13 sept 2007 at 22:47 (give or take a few seconds).

My conclusion is that MS are not only sneaky ... ... they are quick about it too!

    Hi Pete,

    Saw this as well.

Too bad, because this sort of behavior just adds to the mistrust of MS.

What I'm amazed at is the poor PR response and the stupidity on the part of the group within MS that decided that this was a good idea. What were they thinking? Did they think this would go undected?

Combined & moved to General discussions.

Since it applies to both Vista & XP, this is the better place to have the discussion in a single thread.

I've been trying to think... Did they in the past ask for consent while updating Windows Update?

Can't say that I'm too concerned about it (if at all)... it's an update to the Windows Update software...

The only *issue* seems to be that it still installs even if you have your system set to Turn off Automatic Updates.

I let Vista do it's automatic update thing - figuring maybe it'll fix itself one day. Because of shear laziness to repair 2 other computers, I now use removable hard drives on a lone dual processor machine. My normal is XP Pro SP2. Last nite I put the drive Vista in, it didn't ask for a password, strange, and it said I had never updated any part of it - stranger. Desktop looked a little different too. I let it go to M$ for updates and it said it needed 31! After it ran through all the claptrap, it said no updates were needed, it had them all already...!!! It now seems to be normal again?? I'm missing something here. I have a wireless network, but the desktop is cat5 wired. The network is WEP protected, and shows as a 'Secure' network to outside scanners. The drive with Vista on it was sitting on the shelf.... Am considering turning off automatic update..... Also on the same network is my wireless laptop which had no problems at all with Vista Home Premium.....

Something changed on my drives.... all by itself...................

I think so - especially when logging onto Windows Update we were at least advised that an upgrade as needed to MS Update.

MS Update always checks that the latest update software is installed and then advises if it is not? Seems like they 'forgot' this one :)

Nope, that is still what happens.

I have an XP SP2 VM which I hadn't used for a while. I 'disconnected' the network, and checked the version of wuapi.dll. It is 7.0.6000.374 (older version, the update is 7.0.6000.381).

I have AU set to Turn off Automatic Updates.

I visited WU, and it wanted to install WU software. I told it no.

My WU components are still 7.0.6000.374.

    Ms.Silent update causes problems

Ms. silent update is causing problems for people that use the Repair function in XP
A silent update that Microsoft deployed widely in July and August is preventing the "repair" feature of Windows XP from completing successfully.

Ever since the Redmond company's recent download of new support files for Windows Update, users of XP's repair function have been unable to install the latest 80 patches from Microsoft.

It's been recommended to run the commands shown in the article without the silent switch (/s). It will suppress errors should any of the dlls be corrupted or otherwise fail to register. It has also been recommended to stop the Automatic Update service prior to registering the dlls, then restart it when finished.

In Windows XP, from a command prompt.

    net stop wuauserv
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
    net start wuauserv
    exit

In Vista, from a command prompt running with elevated permissions.

    net stop wuauserv
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wucltux.dll
    regsvr32 wudriver.dll
    regsvr32 wups2.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuwebv.dll
    net start wuauserv
    exit

    Dave,

Do you have any inside information or is it "just" a belief? A friend of mine really need them to rework that load of "you know what "! (If you missed my thread, see Windows Update locks up computer)

Forgive me if I'm getting above myself but shouldn't there be some sort of warning in the other forums not to recommend using Windows Repair until Microsoft comes out with a fix? (Well, at least unless as a last resort)

    mickzer.
