Resolved Microsoft Update Failure

    Hello I'm having trouble downloading a certain Microsoft Update on my XP Professional SP-3. Can't install .net framework 3.5 (KB951847) x86
    Every time I try to update this update it fails with a error code of 0x643.
    These are currently on my machine
    I have .Net Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)
    .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1
    .NET Framework CRT
    .NET Framework CA
    .NET Framework WinForms
    .NET Framework 1
    .NET Framework 2
    Dr. Watson
    .NET Framework PreXP
    .NET Framework CLR
    .NET Framework ASP.NET
    If someone could assist I would appreciate.

    Find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

    To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

    Turned on Automatic Updates which only last night I turned off for performance but I tried to do the .NET update once again. I also put on automatic (Started) the Background Intelligence Transfer Service) which I had on just Manuel. Here is the results (Failed)

    When I was reviewing this last scan through the run utility I noticed this part.............Just curious does the following mean that this update is not required which Microsoft was recommending to download. Thanks again for the explanation.

    I would start by completely resetting your Windows Update.

    Try using these instructions:

    • Click Start > Run, type services.msc, and then click OK
    • Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop
    • Click Start > Run, type cmd, and then click OK
    • Type cd %windir%, and then press [Enter]
    • Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press [Enter]
    • Type exit, and then press [Enter]
    • In services.msc, Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start

    After the above, revisit Windows Update.

    Hi again I had done what you had suggested to reset my automatic updates then revisit the update page to install the update once again Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86 but regret that it failed to install but thank you Arie for your efforts. I'm still wondering how this stubborn update can be installed on my XP installation.

    Thank you Arie--I started with the first link you suggested to install manually then at the very end of the set up a error popped up stating Please report error to Microsoft have to close stating a error had occurred during setup--Did not complete correctly. Then it uninstalled all the application before I send the error off to Microsoft. I did not even try the other link you had send due to this error.

    Download the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool, run it, and remove Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Leave version 1 alone. After uninstalling and rebooting, go to Windows Update and it will show that Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 needs to be installed. After that, the update for it (KB917283) should install correctly.

    Well this cleanup tool done the trick Arie. I assuming I had a corrupt file in my .NET Framework 2.0. This time when I went back into windows updates to download the .NET Framework files were successful in downloading. Thank goodness!

    "Resolved" Evaluation of thread -- In my case what was the deciding factor of being able to have a successful download of this update .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for Windows XP was I had a corrupt file with the 2.0 .NET Framework I say this in believing when Arie had send me a link to remove this 2.0 file from my computer and then immediately restarted the computer then and only then when I went back into the Microsoft Update Utility and tried once again to reinstall the family pack 3.5 everything fell back into place with a successful download. I have to hand it to this gentleman (Arie) in my opinion is right sharp in resolving issues that come up with repairing what ever the issue might be. I be truthful in the beginning here I was thinking I'm going to have to reinstall my XP installation to get it back to where it would successfully download the update never thinking I had a corrupt file on my system. That proves to me there's other ways in solving issues without going to the extreme to solve problems that might arise. Windows BBS is lucky to have his expertise among his team of helpers as well.
