    Today I ran MES to check my computer for any errors.
    Top left hand corner, shows the following [Computer Status - Potentially Unprotected].
    What actually does this mean? is MES not working or computer is indeed not protected against viruses etc.

    You need to update the definitions database, click the Update Tab then Update.

    Thank you for suggestion. I carried out this procedure before posting this request for help in this forum and again when I read your reply.
    The caption is still present, top left corner.

    Top left corner of your desktop?
    If so, it may be coming from some malware.

    My updates are 1.71.2204.0 for av and spyware from 1/14/2010. Are yours the same?

    You mean top left corner of the MSSE dialogue I think.
    Go to the 'Settings' tab and make sure that the real-time protection is turned on.

    Updates are now: 1.71.2212

    rleale and others, I do refer to MSSE software and I also failed to update at the time of my posting. I apologise for this error.
    MSSE is now functioning properly and mentioned caption is no longer present.
