After going through several pages of internet posts on this BUG without finding anything worthwhile, I thought I had found the simple obvious solution: un- and re-install mse. That worked fine until about the 4th reboot later, when it once again began refusing to update.

I don't consider it worth my time to try the aggressive settings of MicrosoftFixit50202.msi.

Is nobody else finding this unacceptable?

Are you getting anything that looks like an error message that would help us here?

There is no Windows Update there. Windows Time is followed by Windows User Mode Driver Framework.

Updating seems to be working, though; http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
shows 102 updates succeeding today. And 8 more newly found and being installed right now (2 of 8).

A quick Google doesn't suggest to me any way to restore the service.

I suppose I could do another repair now while the procedure is still fresh in my notes.

    Thanks

Update: I guess it just need to be prodded by a few

harsh thoughts. It (mse update) is working now - though for how long is moot.

The update site shows 112 successful updates today, and there is still no Windows Update in the services.msc window.

    Update: Presumably Rresolved

Well, I keep trying MSE Update and it keeps working, or at least not failing with an error message.

I suppose that, like one of the commenters to the page you referenced, my Windows Update service is not missing, just differently named. I'm glad to have what appears to be a definitive solution to the problem, even though I don't need it at the moment.

I had seen a post (but not the discoveryourpc page) saying the answer was to delete the Software Distribution folder, but I didn't try it because it didn't seem to make sense and did seem dangerous to do without understanding.

    Thank you

A few years ago I had some problems with the Windows Update Service and it was frustrating. I contacted Microsoft and received the following instructions which fixed my problem. You can try them if you wish - maybel they will help. Toward the end of this there are some step by step instructions for renaming the Software Distribution folder.

Wow! Thanks. With all this information I'm hoping the problem pops up again. Maybe if I'm observant I'll get a clue as to what's corrupting the folder (if that is indeed the problem).

    Well, 0x80248014 stands for:

So you may have a missing service (did you disable any services? Some people think that is useful to "speed up" Windows...)

Correct. In Windows XP the service is called Automatic Updates.

That makes sense. I thought it was "can't connect (weak signal or router offline) ", which did not seem consistent with other pages' loading without problem. No, I didn't disable any services - that I know of; it's possible I did something that had the effect of disabling a service.

Anyway the update service, including MSE update, has been working fine since sometime last night.

    Thanks.

    Resolved

I have no idea why MSE update stopped exhibiting the problem behavior (Update failed, Connectivity problem, Error code 80248014) and resumed proper updating, but it has. I am sufficiently impressed by the information posted by MrBill and MitchellCooley that I am fairly confident that I can deal with the problem if it recurs.

    Thank you
