(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is helping the estimated hundreds of millions of customers still running Windows XP, which it stopped supporting earlier this month, by providing an emergency update to fix a critical bug in its Internet Explorer browser.

"We decided to fix it, fix it fast, and fix it for all our customers," spokeswoman Adrienne Hall said in a statement. "

Microsoft started releasing the fix Thursday through the automated Windows Update system.

The download and installation went quickly and smoothly for my Win7 IE 11 system. A restart is needed. Thanks for the heads-up.

I quote from Microsoft Security Bulletin MS14-021 - Critical

    Concerning IE11 on Windows 7:

    and from the Update FAQ:

I wonder what they were smoking ... ... when they wrote those notes?
Has anyone found "the 2961851 update" on Microsoft Download Center?
Has anyone found "the 2961851 update" anywhere?
    Does it exist?
Has it been replaced by 2929437?

@antik, et. al. Did you guys think to crack open the EXE Patch to look at the build files?

This "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2936068) "
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42436
Is such *HYPERBOLIC NONSENSE* to create *F-U-D* for those not moving off XP.

I would *HIGHLY* encourage you to download the update then crack open the EXE (I used 7-zip--many more Tools to use (some better than 7-zip).

If you look at the files contained. You'll see the make/build files were compiled/completed back in March and April *BEFORE* April 8th

Conclusion? They knew this, but held it back precisely because of this *F-U-D* campaign.
    ...................................................

Yes, yes, before I get called out, I'm acutely aware of "Code Reuse" just funny this "reuse" build was from 03/6/2014
    Version, MUI, Manifest Files
    ..............................

2nd-IF you don't use Internet Explorer (which is most users) you have no worries.

3rd. If you *ARE* the concerned type--since MSFT in it's infite Wisdom never allowed users to remove a horribly designed Web Browser.

Point the Browser to a "Fake" (null) Proxy and *GUARANTEED* to have I.E. disabled on your PC
(how's it going outbound when it's a *FAKE* proxy???

    **************************************************************
Fake Proxy Servedr for Windows XP Internet Explorer
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/browsers/ht/disableieproxy.htm

Click on the Tools menu option in Internet Explorer, followed by the Internet Options... option.

Choose the Connections tab from the Internet Options window.

Click on the LAN Settings... button. The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window will appear.

In the Proxy server section, check the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections).

In the Address: text box, enter 0.0.0.0.

In the Port: text box, enter 80.

Click OK and then click OK again in the Internet Options window.

    Close all Internet Explorer windows.

If you wish to undo these changes in the future, simply follow the steps listed above again, only this time uncheck the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) in step 4.

    ***************
FYI--I've disabled my Autoupdates and Background Transfer. I'd encourage the same.

Not that I'm a conspiracy nut. But MSFT gives one cause. I was creating a slip stream file (after April 8th) Each time I ran it, I got a random read error/missing file off my XP-Disk.

I changed the Date back to April 2nd--*WOW*!!!! Magastically everything worked *JUST FINE*.
    Hmmmmmmmm *cheshire grin*

WhereIsMyMindAT, what strikes me is the incredible complexity of maintaining all these legacy OS and IE version combinations. Even if you use another browser, IE is hard coded into the OS and parts of the code still run. Microsoft is the alpha competitor, preferred by nearly everybody; damned if they don't, damned if they do.

"...the firm is once again facing the sort of backlash that seems to attach itself both comically and magnetically to Microsoft anytime it does, well, anything. "

    http://www.extremetech.com/computin...s-ie-bug-in-windows-xp-but-its-a-huge-mistake

There is one XP machine I've cleaned twice, once for fake anti-virus ransomware, and a second time for cryptolocker. The browser was IE6. I updated IE and the OS, installed firefox and strongly suggested using it, but both times all the new bookmarks were in IE and ff showed no signs of having been run.

MS gets props from me for doing this fix, and I don't really care how they arrived at the decision or when the code was written.

    (edited for spelling and tense)
