    MS Win Latesr critical update

Arie: I have been diligent in D/L critical updates, but I am a little confused about the latest IE6Service Pack(1) listed under Critical Updates

My impression was that only the updates to one's existing browser would appear under Critical Updates. I have IE 5.5SP2 ,feel comfortable with it, and do not wish to have IE6, It appears that if I D/L this update I will then have IE6. Is this correct?

Yes. I'm not sure why it would show up when using IE 5.x... Maybe a new trick to get the last people over to IE6?

The Windows Update site always shows the latest version of Internet Explorer if you do not have it. So if you have 5.5sp2 which is not the latest version, then it will always show the latest version. This will not happen once you have the latest updates.

    Download Issues IE 6 sp1

Can't download anything after installing sp1 on XP pro. Any reason for this. Was thinking it may be related to the one question about OE and downloading attachments? Not sure what to do or how to fix it. Any suggestions or ? Thanks.

Just to be clearer now in rereading. The dialogue box does appear but usually only after clicking "here if the download doesn't start" box....then no progress bar. Nothing. All sites. Although the truly odd thing is that it WILL download using a dialup instead of a cable connection. Now that i'm thinking about it that is odd. Same IE....different connection. Security setting? Odd glitch?

For inquiring minds: I would think twice about installing sp1 with XP Pro as I did and it totally messed up my machine. It wiped out all my restore points and even though I followed directions carefully it didn't archive when I told it to as per directions.

After the download installation I lost my dial-up window and couldn't get it back and when I did connect to the internet through other methods when the browser opened it would just stare at me with blank page for about five minutes before it would start working and the same with Outlook Express when checking mail. After two days of trying everything I could find or think of, I reformatted and it will be a long time before I try the sp1 again.

After having read about some nasty IE5.X virus that reads the keystrokes off your keyboard and stores them in a file for hackers to read (including credit card numbers) I was going to post asking about everyone's thoughts on IE6. Well, I guess you answered my question. Forget that.

I currently run IE5.0 and believe it or not everytime I try to update it with some security patch, it remains at 5.0. I'm trying to upgrade to 5.5 but I can't find the actual browser. When I select IE5.5 at M$'s site, all I get are patches and tools. Anyone know where I can find the actual 5.5 browser? Once I've got it I can download SP2 for it.

I'm using Win98SE and I don't ever use Windows Update - it has hosed some of the customer's rigs who use the same mobo as I do. I simply wait for the Service Packs.

I am almost sure that you can download 5.5 SP2 right on top of your 5.0 version. Here is the LINK for that download.

Some people would say, why not just upgrade to 6.0? When I had to reformat my puter, it set me back to the 4.0 version and I almost didn't find the latest version so I could upgrade mine. I ended up finding it and it made me download the 6.0 one. I haven't had any problems, that I am aware of, since getting it.

    You decide. Good luck.

(still no replies on whether downloading the 6.0 latest SP might help with my printer issue........)

    :)

    Sandi's Site. . .

Check out Sandi's Site for some useful links for IE and OE. From here I was able to D/L a copy of my browser (OE 5.01) and burn it to a CD for future installs rather than doing the whole agonizingly slow download process yet again.

Someone in this BBS community turned me on to this site but I can't remember who it was. Sorry:eek: . . . but THANKS.

    HTH :)

Kevin...One reason I didn't post the link is I figured everyone who HAD read it was tired of seeing it. It was a rather long post and very involved. The issue still hasn't been resolved, but, HERE is the link to the Printer Problem. I am too frustrated to do anything about it just yet. Plus, there has been so many things happening around here this past month that I haven't had time to mess with it. It still prints, but haven't worried about the 'garbage' too much since I'm not printing anything important.

Thanks for any HEADS UP you can give me with this.

    :)

I just thought I'd put in my two cents worth here. I have installed Internet Explorer 6.0sp1, and I have to say I lov eit. It works fine on my Windows ME machine, in fact I like i tmuch better than 6.0. :) I think it's more stable and does load a little faster. :) I haven't had a single problem and I've been using it since about around the time it came out. Although it sounds like XP users are having problems with it, I hope Microsoft relases a fix for this soon. Although did you guys know that if you Installed Internet Explorer 6.0 and tried to uninstall it and when it reboots after installing, windows won't start, you get a shell32.dll error, and you have to go crazy trying to fix it...there is a work aroud but it doesn't always work. :)
