Instant messaging (IM) got more spirited and savvy today with the worldwide availability of a public preview program for MSN® Messenger 6.

Read my article (complete with a number of screen-shots)

Yay! I love it! What an awesome program. Customizable emoticons, buddy icons (at last), skins, integrated webcamming. I could just go on and on. There is a little bug with the log in procedure but I expect that'll be cleared up with the final release.

Had the beta for a few weeks now, and after M$ have removed the bugs its a fantastic upgrade, especially from version 5 which I refused to use. :|

Webcam compatibility and connections are much easier, and although you get sick of the games after around 5 minutes the customisable icons never grow old, especially if you like to annoy people who support the opposing "soccer" team. :D (As you Americans say. ;) )

OK the final version is released (I believe). I saw MSN 6 finally listed on MS download site and it showed that it was just put up on 7/16, so I'm assuming this is the final release.

Do I need to uninstall my beta version or can I just install the final version over it?

Nah I didnt bother. Just installed over it. Though be prepared to lose all your emoticons that you have put on yourself and so on.

Id also recommend installing MsgPlus! as an add on.

All of its features are there to see @ http://www.msgplus.net

The new version is 6.0.0602 put out just yesterday so I'm assuming this is the final release and not another beta?

edit: I installed the Plus for MSN Messenger and noticed it wanted me to install some kind of sponsor software that would change my homepage. This seemed kinda questionable to me (spyware-like), so I declined installation of the sponsor. Plus installed anyway. Was I right to decline this sponsor installation?

Yeah, you have the opportunity to uncheck the box which is perfectly ok. I do it too. Great add on for MSN. Being able to use /me like as on IRC alone is cool!! :D

So like if I type /me is doing something, it'll do what it does in IRC?

Yep. ;) Give it a try. Although the person who you are sending it to needs to have MsgPlus installed as well, otherwise it will look like its worked on your side, but not on their side. :D

Also, in an instant message window you can go to 'Plus' -> 'Send Command' -> 'Sounds' and send various sounds to people. :D

Again, they'll only hear the sounds if they have the software installed. Can use things as well as bold and underline by holding ctrl and pressing u or b too.

Apologies for turning this into a MsgPlus! thread mods. :-/
