Microsoft money 2004 very slow

I have been using MS Money for a number of years. When I create a new transaction, or edit one, or sometimes when I navigate between accounts, the response is very slow (frequently up to 10 secs to respond).

Task Manager shows MS Money consuming all free CPU cycles for a number of seconds. My CPU is a Celeron 2.6GHz, with 1GB memory so I wouldn't expect it is a slouch for this work. Excel, Word etc are fine. Just Money [2004, standard edition].

I tried trimming the file transactions back to the last couple of years but it is just as slow so it doesn't seem to be the history. My file was 15MB in size and I archived entries prior to April 05 to reduce it to 12MB.

I don't want to start again ... that would seem a dramatic fix, and lose the ability to tracking back on previous expenses etc.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is Money 2006 likely to be any better (NB in NZ we can only get Money Standard)?
