When I try to log onto the internet, running WIN98, I keep getting the following:

Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Sometimes I do not get the message logging on. I will be on line and go to another link (doesn't matter which link) and the error box pops up. Of course IE closes down. I have clicked on the send to Microsoft, but, I have not had any results with that. What could be causing this problem? I have run spy-bot, ad-aware and AVG anti virus and nothing is detected.

Should I reinstall IE 6, and if so how do you reinstall it?

I suggest you try a repair of Internet Explorer - this should be very straightforward on Win 98 ....

Add/Remove Programs > MS Internet Explorer and click on Change/Remove. A popup box should appear - choose the Repair option.

If that does not solve the problem run System File Checker - under Tools on MSInfo. Can't give you the full route as I have no access to a Win 98 box at the moment.

Fast way to run System File Checker in 98.

Start > Run type: sfc.exe and press Enter.

I think the problem is finally solved. Using SFC the Msvcrt.dll file was extracted from my OEM 98 disk, saved to c:\. Then starting in the pc with a dos prompt only the new extracted file was put in WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Everything seems to be working ok for now. It just amazes me how one day things are running fine then, BOOM, things go wrong for seemingly no reason. Thanks for the help.:D :D :D
