Microsoft Fax Services Error

Hi. Don't know whether anyone can help with this. I fax docs directly from the computer to a phone #usinf the Fax Services that come with WinXP. Sometimes it goes thru no problem. Sometimes I get a fatal error, and no matter how many times I try the number, it just won't work that day, but it WILL fax to other numbers. I've racked my brain and cannot figure out why it just depends on the day as to whether it works or not. Any idea very appreciated. OR fax freeware that works equally appreciated.

 

Any error messages that you can relay? I am not clear if this is on your end or the other end. When you say "fatal error ", from where does that message appear and when?

The sending a fax monitor comes up, it dials (I can hear the modem dial), at about 25 seconds I can hear the modem make that "screechy" sound it makes before it connects, then nothing untill about 110 seconds when it pops up a "An error occurred while sending the fax" and "The attempt to send the fax failed "
messages.

This number can receive other faxes from other numbers and I can send faxes to other numbers on the same days that I cannot send to them.

 

That is a mysterious one. The fact that the problem is intermittent and the other numbers work only makes resolving the problem more difficult.

I'm over my head. Hopefully someone who uses this program often can offer some ideas. Mine are limited to checking your settings, removing the number and putting it back in, observing whether any other programs are running when the problem occurs, and perhaps even trying a different phone line or jack, especially if there is any crackle on that line.
