That would be kb936929 which is RC2 it seems from examining the shortcut script that you posted Pete. :) Tricky devils, what?

I think you're right - although the file sizes are 2 Mb apart.

Thanks for the info! I was about to use up one third of my monthly bandwidth allotment to download SP3 tonight - I would've been really put out if I'd found out afterwards that it had all been for naught!
So even though it says "Final" at
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/Windows-XP-SP3.shtml, given that it was updated there on April 23rd, I guess I will wait until I read somewhere that Microsoft has actually officially released the thing!

Last week I stupidly downloaded what was supposed to be the bonafide final release for SP3 from a non-Microsoft web site. I installed it and the installation went flawlessly. I rebooted and when my system tried to reboot it got to the logon screen and the system did a restart. It did this no less than 10 times. I then just did a complete power down to see if that would correct the problem (yes I know I was grabbing at straws) but it did nothing. I then attempted to boot in safe mode and the same problem happened (immediate reboot). I tried to boot from my emergency boot disc and that wouldn't work. I tried for a good 2 hours to figure out a way to get the thing back up and running and nothing I did worked. I finally had to bite the bullet and do a complete hard drive rebuild. Thankfully I had most everything backed up on CD but it took me a total of 11 hours to get the machine back to the point it was just before that damned SP3 install.

Now I don't know if I'll even install the real SP3 once Microsoft releases it. From the sound of it they're having definite problems with it.

I'd not do it without a backup image of the system drive.

Actually, I probably won't do it anyway. I quit doing hotfixes over a year ago. Things have been much simpler since.

I test upgrades on my laptop first. I installed Service Pack 3 v .3311 a few months ago. While my laptop has worked flawlessly since the update, it will still be a while before I update the desktop (my primary machine).

Agreed. I have recent Acronis full backups. Means I can bite the bullet and if things go "pear shaped" I only have an hour or two to get the system fully up to date.
Hmmm, must be time for another full backup. Been a couple of months!

It is a very minor problem which affects a very small minority of users and the same problem exists in Vista SP1 - from MS.....
I installed SP3 RC2 when it was released and the computer has run flawlessly since.

Exactly. They haven't pulled the update that was released to manufacturing.
