What this article is about is one issue - the accusation that MS was stacking the deck for MS security apps.

The original issue is about something called PatchQuard which MS says stops any 3rd party app from changing the Kernel. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17082368

PatchQuard is for the 64 bit Vista version. A contemplated SP for Vista would install it on 32 bit versions about a year out.

Which McAfee et al are screaming about and what MS is giving them is a bit cloudy.

All quote's from same URL source from my first post ...
Charles, do you feel MS will continue to block kernel access (required by most current security tools)? Is this a "Smoke and Mirrors ". Yeah, you can use 3rd party tools, but will have to run without access to kernel level of OS? All we can do is wait for feedback from this next step ....

    Hi Dennis,

I don't know what "Kernel access" means - does it mean hooking the Kernel as heretofore? That's what MS says PatchGuard is designed to block. What do the 3rd party's want? The ability to hook the Kernel or the ability to read what's there and to be able to filter it? I quess we have to stay tuned :)

    Regards - Charles
