    Hello all!

In another thread there has been a discussion on why it is so difficult to prevent Windows/MSN Messenger from running in the background.

Norton AntiVirus offers the option to protect messengers, not only the Microsoft variants but others too. Even if Messenger is set to not autostart, Norton AntiVirus starts it anyway, if the option to protect it is chosen.

My experience is limited to Norton and I would appreciate if users of other AntiVirus software would "report" on the behaviour.

#1 - do they have the option to protect "messengers "?

#2 - if Messenger is set to not autostart, does the AntiVirus software start it anyway?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

Not meaning to change the subject,, or get it going in another direction,
Seams messenger needs to be addressed in a version specific way,, version of messenger and the OS involved,,
Unless we can find a common csdl or reg tweak to disable and enable it,,
Or like you say a security package is starting it ?

I was having messenger called up when opening outlook
until we updated it, even after that it was called up when I created a new account,or just because it wanted to,sporadicly, until tweaked, probably the same edit
you or somebody else referred to in the other thread , I used
    Outlook Express 5.0 Tweak'r: http://accesscodes.hypermart.net/product04.html
I wouldn't advise using this on XP systems

Ive never seen it since but we don't use outlook much,, nor messenger

Someone here did suggest simply rename the exe,or the whole folder, when your not using it ,, gee works great to

The only problem Ive had with it,, is it will open when viewing hotmail..and until we updated messenger would not want to close even after IE was closed

seams if you delete the hot mail control that will stop it,,
    theirs two of them
    MSNMessenger.HotmailControl
    MSNMessenger.HotmailControl.1

I have been using MSN Messenger for 3 years and have never had it want to continually keep starting up, unless I set it to. I have used Norton AV, which came installed on the system, AVG and eTrust AV. None of them made MSN Messenger sign in automatically or run in the background, although before removing them both, Norton would activate Windows Messenger. Neither AVG or eTrust have an option to monitor instant messaging programs that I have found, but the IM programs have options to have file transfers scanned, which by using that option, does not cause the AV to automatically start the IM program.

    Lonny,

You´re right that it can be OS dependent, especially Windows Messenger which only comes with WinXP. The strange thing is that I have a memory of having WM installed when I was running WinME. Maybe WM was a stand alone program until MSN Messenger was released?

MSN Messenger is a stand alone program which can be downloaded and installed separately. Doesn´t that indicate that it should behave similarly on different platforms, only differing in where things are installed on the system?

    Dave,

the only sign on WinXP of msmsgs.exe running in the background is in TaskManager. I don´t know where it would show in other operating systems.
There is nothing on the taskbar or anywhere else on the screen which makes it not immediately detectable. On WinXP, You have to look for it in TaskManager under the processes tab.
