Forgive me for being a little confused.

What exactly is the difference between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger?

    Is there a difference?

As far as I can see the terms are used almost interchangeably on various MS pages and the 'appearance' of either option seems pretty much identical.

    Is there a preferred version?
Is one more secure than the other?
Are there any downsides to either?

Windows Messenger - Many IT managers use this to send messages to someone on their network.

You have to go to a command prompt and type the message to a IP address or a user...

MSN messenger is similar to all the other messenger programs that are done on the desktop.

The program you're talking about is called just plain Messenger (Administrative Tools>Services>Messenger).

Windows Messenger is the program that's installed by default when you install windows. It's basically a stripped down version of MSN Messenger. Either that, or MSN Messenger is an enhanced version of Windows Messenger. Take your pick. :) If you use Windows Messenger you can communicate with people that use MSN Messenger and vice versa. MSN Messenger has some features that Windows Messenger doesn't. The only way to know if you can use them or not is to give it a try.

Just more confusion due to MS's crazy way of naming their apps.
