Messages disappear [in Outlook Express]

Hello and thanks in advance:

I have an incredible problem and I cannot figure out what to do.

In Outlook Express 6 whenever i read a message it is not bolded anymore and if I close the application and reopen the message that have been read has disappeared.

I tried to restore messages from the archived forder - assuming that they are there (they are not in the deleted folder) but I am unable to do so because that folder is in use.

In Options-->Tools-->Maintenance: compact messages in the background was selected - I have unchecked that option but it doesn't seem to make any difference

Can anyone help?

It may be just hiding read messages.

In Outlook Express, go to View>Current View and click "All Messages." See if the read messages reappear.
