If the person sending you the mail uses Outlook or Outlook Express then here is an explanation I found using groups.google:

The sender (usually from Microsoft OE or other Outlooks) is using HTML
composition. OE always sends both HTML and plain text when using HTML
composition. If you set View>View Attachments Inline in the Message
Window, the HTML version will be displayed in the message window,
otherwise you have to click the attachment link to display the plain
    text in a browser window.

Netscape Communicator can send the same type of message, but with it you
have the option of sending HTML only, plain text only, or both after
    composing the message in HTML.

If you View>Headers>All in one of those messages, you'll see:
    Content-Type: multipart/alternative
