Well my problem started just today. If I right click anywhere the menu that comes up is always about 2/3s of the way blacked out, totally black. The individual commands clear up if I run my cursor over them but the edges of the menus still remain black. The same sort of problem happens with menus at the top of a program (File, Edit, View, ect). Also about the same time I noticed another kinda glitch, at some points if I was on a webpage and clicked a link to open Windows Media Player and play a video or music all of the windows open would go white and would only come back if I moused over or clicked on them.

At this point I was a bit worried, so I went to check my firewall to make sure nobody was messing with me. (I'm running Sygate Personal Firewall) and it's icon was not in the taskbar! So I went into the start menu and opened it. When it opened up the area that normally shows the icons of applications that are accessing the internet was totally blank and other parts of the GUI were missing as well.

I then ran a virus scan and found no problems.

Anyone have any idea whats going on or heard of this before?

And lastly I think my major (altho very unwanted) option might be to format. I've had trouble formatting with Windows 2000 before so if anyone has a very detailed step by step guide they could give a URL to I'd be very happy. Seems I always have some sort of trouble with the bootdisk and getting the CD to be found.

    Thanks for any help.

Sounds nasty. Four suggestions for you (and in this order)

Shut down your firewall for a bit and run a virus scan from an online scanner. Housecall is good as are several others.

Run both the latest version of Ad-aware and Spybot to get rid of any spyware/malware. Then dump all your temp files and temporary internet files.

start~run~sfc /scannow and let it find/replace any missing or damaged system files. 2K CD will probably be needed.

start~run~cmd and then chkdsk x: /r (where "x" is the drive letter and do it for each drive). You will have to reboot for it to run on your system drive for sure and maybe others.
