Hello all, I have been having troubles with my computer blue screening and rebooting (stop errors)...at first i believed it to be a driver problem and used windows debugger which pointed to a few drivers....so i checked for new, and even downgraded some to older ones (ati's new drivers for my card were pointed to and seemed to be iffy so i downgraded them to the originals)..a couple days of no blue screens or reboots...i thought i was in the clear...wrong.

so after the frustration worn off a bit i did some more research and started testing with memtest86 v3.2.....the first time i scanned my two modules (512mb x 2) it flooded my screen with errors and i let it do a lot of passes because at that time i didn't know it ran continuously and it racked up about 400 errors. yeah so now you say "hey it is your ram, are you stupid!?" come on now that was my first thought too, but then i tried testing each module by themselves and guess what? no errors when they are used by themselves...not to mention i tried every possible combination on the board trying to find a bad memory socket...as you would imagine this took forever with no true pinpointed bad module, socket, or anything. Before even running any tests i had ordered a new 1 gb stick from newegg....and of course i wanted to test it just because...it had no errors by its lonesome...so that was good....but then i thought i didn't want to waste my 512 mb sticks by just discarding them both as faulty so i tested the following ways with memtest...

all three modules: errors showed up...i wasnt surprised.
the new module(1 gb) and one of the old modules(512mb): no errors
the new module(1 gb) and the other old module(512mb): no errors
....this made me think.... "hmm? "

I then just tested the two old modules once again...a lot of errors showed up for numerous restarts of the test and what not....

Now even more frustrating news: today i tried the above testings again...no errors have showed up.....not even with just the two old modules which were giving me the errors in the first place...so what does this mean? I have no idea why no errors are showing up now and why they were in the first place...this doesnt make any sense to me really...you think if one of the 512mb modules was bad it would show up no matter what the combination is but it wasn't....it was only showing up with both of the 512mb modules in...and now with both of the 512mb modules in it isn't showing any errors in memtest86....any ideas? Each dump would point to a driver but i messed with all of the drivers it pointed to and it still occurred (blue screens/reboots)....the system is less than a year old...never had problems before...everything is compatible with each other (hardware is for sure) and i never had any troubles before and have not installed anything out of the ordinary...no virus problems and no spyware/adware problems...i'm running out of ideas!

It's very possible your ram isn't causing the BSOD. But there are a few million other possibilities...

    Introduction to Stop Errors

"Stop errors in a nutshell are errors that are serious enough to cause Windows to stop. They are similar to the blue screen errors that were present on Windows 9x, however there is no option to try and resume the session in a Windows NT Stop Error (Windows 2000 and all XP members included). "

    Continued:

    http://mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/bsod.php

Go here to search for the error message:

Thanks for the quick reply and links! I will definately look them up. As for my memtest results do you know why it shows errors sometimes and other times it doesn't? I just moved the 512mb modules around and just got flooded with errors on test 6....here is to show how my banks looked for these tests (i took the 1 gb module out because im sure it isnt the cause.) The letters are to distinguish between the two different memory modules.

    -512mb(A)
    -empty

    -512mb(B)
    -empty

...no errors...but then i switched them like this below..

    -512mb(B)
    -empty

    -512mb(A)
    -empty

...my screen was flooded with 79 errors on test 6 and each said it was 268.2 mb...

is memtest pulling my leg? or is one of these modules indeed bad?

i forgot to mention this is dual channel memory....DDR400

I already used the microsoft memory tool and it came back with no errors. As for them being matched pairs the answer is yes because they were installed by gateway as a built system from their site...and they do support dual channel...they never had a problem before but now i seem to be getting random stop errors and they sometimes show errors in memtest and other times don't show anything..not sure what the problem is...i can't pinpoint it...

Have you checked out Event Viewer for error messages relating to the BSOD's and any other problems??

Yeah I have...sorry for not explaining some of the issues i saw in the event viewer that apply to this...of the system errors they seems to point to drivers when i debugged the date of the occurrences....system files such as an ati.sys (video card) file and a sr.sys file (system restore) would be faulted...i rolled back my ati drivers and then looked up the sr.sys on google and most say it wouldnt create the blue screens...

do you think i should try to reinstall windows? some say to but then again memtest testing is not giving me any closure about my ram.

I wouldn't reinstall Windows at this time - there's no guarantee that doing that would fix the problem, especially as it may be hardware related.

Have you removed the video card - if it's a plug in card and reseated it? I would clean the contacts with a soft pencil eraser.

If the video is an onboard chip try try reinstalling/updating the chipset drivers - you might do that anyway.

Run the computer for an extended period with just the 1 Gb RAM module fitted.

If you want to take System Restore out of the equation turn it off (all restore points will be deleted) - I rather doubt that is the source of the problem.

i have an ati radeon x600 128mb video card which is pci express

i will clean its contacts and reseat it...and as you said i am going to keep the 512mb modules out for the time being and see if i get any more errors...if not i would presume the ram is going bad....i will be single channeling until my order of another gig of corsair ram comes in the mail...boo

so if it is indeed the old modules it wont hurt much...i'm hoping its not something more serious!

as for drivers i dont know why they would just start giving me problems...but i know stuff happens...technicians will always have a job! lol

I suggest you get some Contact Cleaner. You can spray the connectors of the RAM modules (and even wipe them gently with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth), but also spray the slots on the motherboard. Make certain it has completely dried and the vapours have disipated before reapplying the power.

When you reinsert the modules, push evenly on both ends. Check the clips are seated all the way.

Thanks for the help guys...I appreciate the input on this headache! I will post the dump asap...then maybe we can narrow this thing down... :)

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 00990000, memory referenced
    Arg2: 00000002, IRQL
    Arg3: 00000001, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
Arg4: 806ffa2a, address which referenced memory

IDriver.exe - Application Error : The instruction at
"0x0166f020" referenced memory at "0x00000ba0 ". The memory could not be
    "read ".

just got this ina dialogue box when installing an update for itunes....it didnt show as an error in event log...

the memory code is not what mine was but this is the type of notification i got...not sure what it means really

this is with the new module installed.

    ***edit***
found this on a website about installing...so it isnt to be worried about??? hmm weird

"On rare occasions, you may see the following error during installation of the Agilent IO Libraries Suite:

    IDriver.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x77511029" referenced memory at "0x0000005c ". The memory could not be "read ".

(The instruction and memory locations may vary.) If you see this error, click OK in the error dialog box, and the installation will continue. No further action is necessary; the IO Libraries Suite will be correctly installed
    "

    then this from microsoft:

"This behavior occurs because the operating system does not allocate a large enough buffer for the maximum string length permitted. When the data is greater than the buffer size. "
