I have an AMD 400mhz that came with 64 mb SDRAM, WIN 98. Bought pc100 256 and my son just added it to empty slot. Things didn't work too well so he removed the 64 mb, leaving the 256. Things run much better but still seems a bit slow on some things. Can you just have one 256 or does it have to be two 128's? Any adjustments need to be made on comp after physically putting in the mem? Comp recognizes the 256 when looking at system resources. Also, when booting up, that first memory test-it used to just run up once and then move on. Now it runs through the numbers, then does it again twice. I also have McAfee loaded. (Someone said that Norton actually works better with Microsoft products??) Thanks a lot for you help. Sure glad you all are up and running again. Missed the Board!

    Welcome back!

One 256-MB stick should run as well as two 128-MB sticks.

If the system ran worse with the 256 + the original 64, and runs slower with the new RAM than with the old, it sounds like an incompatibility between the new RAM and the box.

Just for a test, have the stick moved to the slot where the 64 MB was. It might run better. Stranger things have happened.

Is there a computer brand name we can cross-reference to be sure the correct SDRAM was bought? It comes in different flavors other than the PC-xxx speed, such as buffered, registered, etc.

    Hi JAK,
Check your motherboard manual. It should tell you what size modules, in what combinations, and in which slots.

I have the same problem with memory I bought.only I bought 128 SDDram. It says in my book that I use
168-pin DIMM x2. It had 64mb ram when bought I added the 128 but think it is just generic. So am wondering how do I know what brand of memory to get. I asked tec from the company he said any would do. My computer is a Dawoo.

Since the memory used to only count once and now it counts 3 times on startup, some of the CMOS settings may have changed - especially the Quick Boot setting.

Might want to take a look in the CMOS and make any changes necessary. To have the memory count only once, set the Quick Boot to enabled. The Quick Boot setting may have a slightly different name, depending on the BIOS.

I took my memory out and only put in the 128mb and it is working fine I put it in the slot the 64mb was in. Maybe I will try the 64mb in the other slot and see if it works if not guess I will live with the 128 for the time being.
    Thanks for all the help
