One of my PC's is a PII with 64MB. My problem is that several times but not with a particular logic, I will get the following message:

"There isn't enough free memory to update the display. Close unneeded programs and try again. "

Eventually, since on this PC I only have 64MB RAM, I thought that the problem might be because I have several programs loaded, but now it happened even with Microsoft Access opened only. As regards in the startup I had the Antivirus and something called "webtrap ".

Also on another time I opened a word document and when the document opened it started flickering (sort of blinking).

The OS is Wind 98SE and lately I haven't installed any new software. Also this doesn't happen every time I switch on the pc but on occasional times (they are getting frequent).

Any idea what the problem might be ?

    Thanks

Could be a couple of causes:
    1. Low available space on disk, giving the swapfile trouble
    2. Too many apps loading at boot time.

If you have ample free space on disk, download and run Startuplist.
Then copy/paste the contents of the file it creates, back here.

When's the last time you scandisked and defragged? While I don't believe this is the problem, it may help to lessen the frequency of the error. It certainly couldn't hurt. You probably do this regularly anyway but I have to mention it regardless.

---How much do you know already, or do you care to know?---
Before I get into a dialogue on ram and memory resource, usage and freeing, memory leaks or failure of an app to free resources even after being closed, 64mgRAM not being very much if you frequently use or have open more than one application at a time or if that app is a known memory hungry hog, keeping up to date on known bugs and applying patches when needed,...etc.

Access/ MSOffice/ has been known to spit this error out, caused by a bug_causes memory leak_fixed by a work around_or needs updating:

I managed to solved the problem. It seems that it was a lack of hard disk space. There was about 878MB left of free space. Now I deleted some unneeded data and it seems that everything is back to normal.

    Thanks
